GOLD Coast pro surfer and part-time uni student Ellie J Brooks, a member of the Mermaid Nobbys Miami (MNM) Boardriders Club and World Qualifying Series aspirant has been named 2020 Global Wave Conference Youth Ambassador.

The 6th biennial Global Wave Conference will be held at Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus from February 10-15, 2020. Registration will go live with a launch at the campus at 9am this Friday where Brooks will join fellow professionals and No.1 patron and world surfing champion Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew.

SURF LEGEND’S NEW BOOK

Brooks, a right-foot forward surfer with a deadly backhand attack, competes on the WQS , making the fourth round at Manly last week and is now ranked 39th in the WQS.

This weekend Brooks is listed as a reserve in the men’s MNM team for the 35th annual Kirra Teams.

Predominantly a male event, if Brooks gets a start she will take on the guys and surf in place of MNM’s No.1 powerhouse Anthony Pols who is suffering an ankle injury.

Brooks ticks all the boxes to be the face of the Gold Coast 2020 Global Wave Conference and like her generation is concerned about ocean pollution.

“There should definitely be less plastic,” she said, suggesting using cups and stainless steel water bottles, taking cardboard boxes to the shops instead of a 15 cent bag.

Brooks’ conservation role is to help take care of our beaches, support organisations working to protect our ocean and marine life and to influence change in our community. “Let’s not make going plastic-free a trend but make it a way of life,” she said.

“Let’s implement it in school programs for future generations.”

Brooks’ surfing has taken her to some bizarre — and dangerous — places.

“I was in El Salvador for a QS 6000 and one of the nights my dad and I were having dinner there they locked us inside and walked around the premises with machetes and riffles. We are so lucky here in Australia,” she said.

Brooks adheres to a strict diet after a food poisoning incident while in China although her weakness is peanut butter.

“I now eat a super clean paleo diet. Heaps of fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds and meat,” she said.

“I love my smoothies and anything to do with peanut butter. I steer clear of any weird additives or preservatives too.”

Brooks surfs at least twice a day and trains in between about three times a week incorporating stretching and pilates as well as studying uni online part time.

She looks up to Kelly Slater because “I think he is just an all-round incredible human and someone that I’d love to ask 1000 questions to. He is insanely business savvy, a health guru and surf god.”

Her other hero is seven-time world champ Stephanie Gilmore.

“She is such a down-to-earth, cruisy, stylish, happy human whose smile is contagious,” she said.

“She rips and has such a positive outlook on everything.”
