AUSSIES REVIVED: THE DAY BREE WENT FROM ROOKIE TO MASTER
Whether it was sitting there as a 14-year-old watching siblings Kristyl and Nathan Smith winning back to back Australian ironwoman and man titles, watching several of Shannon Eckstein’s eight ironman titles or being inspired by Pierce Leonard’s 2009 win as an Under-19, Day was there for them all.
“I was inspired,” Day said.
“Watching Pierce’s win still gives me goosebumps to this day.”
But when it came to making his own Aussies memories, Day needed the help of a long-time friend.
IRONMAN RIVALS COMBINE FOR WORTHY CAUSE
Competing for Warilla-Barrack Point Surf Life Saving Club alongside Hayden White, the pair established themselves as two of the sport’s most exciting rising talents with an Aussies performance to remember.
“As Under-19’s, there was one year we won a whole heap of medals in the board and ski relays but then we went and won the Under-19 double ski together,” Day said.
“To win that together was pretty special and then we both moved up to Mooloolaba and won an Aussies open board relay together.
“I have a really special bond with Whitey.
“We’re best mates and it’s really special that we’re both still competing in the sport.
“We’ve won medals at a couple of different clubs now but he’s so reliable and great to race with.”
Now both on the Gold Coast and representing different clubs for one of the rare times in their careers, the Surfers Paradise ironman has put the call out to his Currumbin adversary to recreate old memories.
REIGN OVER: CURRUMBIN HEAD COACH AXED
“Hopefully we can get back to Warilla one day to race together again,” Day said.
“Maybe in masters.”
