WELLINGTON
BEST BET
Race 7 No. 2: JACKYY DEE
Greenness is what cost him the Boot Prelude at Coonamble. Any natural improvement on his part and he can land the big prize on Tuesday.
NEXT BEST
Race 8, No.4: BOOM BOOM BASIL
Won three of six for Kody Nestor. First start now for Brett Robb off a massive trial win in a deep heat.
VALUE BET
Race 2, No.5: WINTER MOON
Building up to a win and down in class when you consider he ran close up to Zoo Station two runs back.
QUADDIE
Race 5: 1,4,12
Race 6: 1,2,5,6
Race 7: 2
Race 8: 1,4
JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
Clayton Gallagher will ride the well-fancied Jackyy Dee in the coveted Wellington Boot.
SCONE
BEST BET
Race 1, No.1: JAMESONHEART
Shown enough in his two Warwick Farm trials to suggest that he has talent beyond county racing.
NEXT BEST
Race 7, No.12: STABORETA
Been hitting the line better than most for a fair while now. His time will come.
VALUE BET
Race 5, No.8: PREEMPTORY
Lightly-raced type who has been gelded and trialled well since his encouraging first campaign.
THE INSIDE MAIL FOR WELLINGTON
RACE 5
Country Championship Final participating trainer Brett Robb saddles-up the handy Frampton mare Majority here for the first time since her honourable fourth in a TAB Highway on the Kensington track on New Year’s Day. If she gets beat, it won’t be through lack of effort. Tobermory has won six races in his career; half of them have come on Heavy tracks, two more on Soft so it is fair to say that ‘conditions suit. Buckin’ Beauty has a massive benchmark rating of 92.
Bet: Majority to win
RACE 6
Been a big (last) week for Tracey Bartley; think Barossa Rosa, and now can he start this week off with a Wellington Cup win via McCormack? He looked like being a pretty high-grade horse early on but then went through a period where he was rather underwhelming. The punchline to the McCormack story is that ‘he’s back’. Ita has raced 16 times for 4 wins, 6 seconds and a third and best of all, she loves the slop. Ditto that for the pacemaker here, Easy Campese. Savoury trialled enormous the other day.
Bet: McCormack to win, exacta 6 to beat 5
RACE 7
Jackyy Dee was a bit green in his trial, same story on race day when he debuted in the Boot Prelude at Coonamble. It’s hard to say for sure and certain that he should or would have won that day had he had a bit more race craft, but he just won’t have to improve all that much to win the big one here. Iron Hat was third and just ahead of Jackyy Dee in the Prelude and no doubt at all that he too is on an upward trajectory. Ventus beat Iron Hat on debut at Quirindi, spelled, has come back and trialled up a treat.
Bet: Jackyy Dee to win, box trifecta 1,2,14,15
RACE 8
Boom Boom Basil had his first, and so far only, six starts for Kody Nestor winning three of them and running an acceptable race in his only TAB Highway visit. You would reckon that’s it for the now Brett Robb-trained gelding because he will have four wins on the board before the blink of an eye. I Am Capitan certainly made his presence felt in a fair few Highways didn’t he. The son of I Am Invincible resumes here at a venue where he is one for one on a Heavy 9. Now that might come in handy to remember.
Bet: Boom Boom Basil to win
THE INSIDE MAIL FOR SCONE
RACE 4
Already gone from 14 to eight runners and we will be doing well to see all of them turn up. It has gone from a fascinating race to a potential ‘gift’ for Chris Waller whose four are down to two and most like just one by 7.30 on race morning. To sum it up, let’s just say whichever, if either, of Afewchoicewords and/or Yggdrasil shows up - back it. If neither arrives, Murrajong Road will have zero excuses for not winning but it could just as easily be at Kembla on Saturday.
Bet: Afewchoicewords to win or, if scratched, Yggdrasil to win or, if it’s scratched, Murrajong Road to win
RACE 5
Preemptory is no good thing to be here. He’s got two other nominations pending for races a bit closer to home. Might just want to keep it in mind in case you see him in a form guide somewhere else later this week that he has been gelded since what was a rather encouraging first campaign. Devil’s Throat could also be at Kembla on Saturday. He is impossible not to at very least respect here and he is probably even the ‘obvious’ favourite but the abovementioned Maher/Eustace gelding is going to be the better price of the two and isn’t that far behind ‘chance wise’. We could even end up here as Kipsbay versus Cream Rises.
Bet: Preemptory to win
RACE 6
Belladeel has been the proverbial model of consistency for this campaign just as he was during the last one. Granted, it is a little bit of a concern than he hasn’t been winning and that his strike-rate is only three from 27 but it’s never been through lack of effort. Brett Partelle is a very good trainer and was so bullish about Isalute when we spoke to him on Monday. The horse has been trialling the house down and his form’s not bad either. Eye Pea Oh only beat four others at Hawkesbury but they were no slackers. Greenheart is on a hat-trick and loves it wet.
Bet: Belladeel to win
RACE 7
Lost a lot of the good ones already and there are more to come so in short, what was a capacity field and rather open affair. Might be anything but come evening time. Wishing and hoping that Starboreta turns up because she shapes as the anchor to the Quaddie and any other all-up that may take one’s fancy. Reason being, she has been running through the line lately like a horse almost destined for an imminent win. Speech, the granddaughter, of Forensics, put the writing on the wall for a second career win when she flashed home late to just miss at Goulburn.
Bet: Starboreta to win, exacta 12 to beat 4
