NEXT BEST

Race 9, No.10: ALICIA ROMA

Another Angela Davies-trained galloper, this one a filly by Your Song who trounced a subsequent winner on debut at Tamworth. What a win that was.

THE INSIDE MAIL FOR MUSWELLBROOK

RACE 1

Angelical, the appropriately-named great granddaughter of Excited Angel, is unbeaten in her two starts to date, one at Newcastle, the other at home at Scone. Paul Messara has found the perfect race for her again - a Class 2 over 1750m, gate 3 and Aaron Bullock. The Borough ran fourth to Angelical at Scone, beaten about three and a half lengths but he could get closer this time up to 1750m. Rockover is a very fit horse. Sir Diamond likes this trip.

Bet: Angelical to win, exacta 3 to beat 5

RACE 2

Milingimbi is a Brett Cavanough-trained filly by Stratum Star who has finished third and second in her two trials ahead of her debut but there is no doubt that she could have won both of them if asked. That last trial was at Scone on December 15 where Cav’s horse ran a half head second the best-bred horse at Muswellbrook, Saivata, who won a trial at Tamworth by four lengths two week earlier. This is a match-race worth the price of admission.

Bet: Milingimbi to win, exacta and quinella 10,11

RACE 3

Lady Goodfellow is out of a Danehill mare and you don’t see as many of those racing these days. A daughter of Dundeel, Lady Goodfellow was beaten the best part of eight lengths in her mid-December trial at Scone but was never pressured. Deelosh is a striking filly from the Kris Lees yard. Scratched from Taree yesterday. Go well on the Beaumont debut. Military Star is nicely in here with the 53kg. Consistent type.

Bet: Lady Goodfellow each-way, box First 4 Nos. 3,4,8,11,13

RACE 4

Reggie’s Boy was spelled after an eye-catching debut in a very strong 2YO race at Port Macquarie back in April. Resurfaced in a 1200m maiden at Tamworth 15-days ago and ran second hitting the line that day with real purpose. Drawn 2, 1280m, fitter - tick all the boxes. Hard not to be impressed with Miss Tambo after her five length win in that Scone trial. Just need luck on her side from the alley. Packer was doing some good things late in the piece on debut at Scone.

Bet: Reggie’s Boy to win

RACE 5

Indicative is a son of Snitzel and reasonably closely related to Paul Messara’s own beloved Alverta. This particular gelding has lodged two seconds from his three career starts. third-up here in the perfect race but with an imperfect draw. Always Hapi sent out some positive signs at the first run back that he will be winning soon into the new campaign. Miss Calculation was beaten four lengths on debut by Paulele.

Bet: Indicative to win

RACE 6

Prodigal Prince was scratched from Sunday’s Gilgandra Cup. The Cody Morgan-trained son of Casino Prince landed some good bets when he won at Scone in a 1600m Benchmark 66 in December 4. Back 100m in trip but had the month off to freshen-up. Highjacker likewise was well backed to win ($8 into $6) at Wyong first-up. Always shown something; he might be on his way now. Toomai has run in two stronger races at her last couple.

Bet: Prodigal Prince to win

RACE 7

Rocstar Boy came from nowhere to win at Quirindi at his first run for Angela Davies on November 18. Fast forward to December 13 and the son of Maurice was sixth in a Class 1 on the Beaumont track but barrier one was no gift to him that day. Mydeel is a was tipped out a moist encouraging short, sharp first-up campaign which culminated in a neat win here. Be strong late. Dashka is trained by Saturday’s TAB Highway winner, Lyle Chandler. Has claims.

Bet: Rocstar Boy to win, exacta 7 to beat 3, Daily Double 1st leg (7), 2nd leg (10)

RACE 8

The Chosen One has only managed to win just once in his 15 starts but it is crucial to factor in that the son of Choisir went within a neck of win number two when he was runner-up at Wyong where he is now housed with Damien Lane. Can easily build on that fine effort and has the gun draw/jockey again. Symo’s Girl is 1 from 20 but she ran two very close seconds at her last two including that one at Warwick Farm where she was $20 into $16. Deserves one.

Bet: The Chosen One to win, quinella 4,5

RACE 9

No more exciting horse racing at Muswellbrook than Alicia Roma. The Angela Davies-trained three-year-old daughter of Your Song sat outside the leader on debut at Tamworth until they straightened up and then it was a matter of how far. That was as impressive a win as you would see and if the time was right - 56.25s - double wow. One other thing, London Ruler, the horse that ran second, beaten five and half lengths, came out and won easily on the weekend itself. Alicia Roma looks the winner again but Small Town is no easy beat.

Bet: Alicia Roma to win, exacta 10 to 13
