CANTERBURY
BEST BET
Race 2, No.2: LONDON
He wasn’t disgraced behind Fireburn on debut earlier this year and has a had a break to mature further and looked the part in his lead-up barrier trial. Well placed here.
NEXT BEST
Race 8, No.3: THE ART OF FLYING
He’s a horse on the rise and broke through to win here last time with a bit in hand and the third-placed horse that day has since come out and won well at Kembla Grange.
VALUE BET
Race 6, No.15: MONEY FROM THE SKY
His head and his body aren’t currently working together but his talent has enabled him to get to Stakes level already and now he drops back to an easier race. He just needs to start better.
QUADDIE
Race 5: 1, 2, 5
Race 6: 1, 2, 9, 15
Race 7: 2, 3, 10, 13
Race 8: 3, 6, 7, 10
JOCKEY TO WATCH
Tommy Berry can have a day out with good chances like This’llbetheone, Oceanography, Broken Hill and Ka Bling.
TRAINER TO WATCH
Chris Waller might have the favourites in five of the eight races today and London, Smirk, Za Ceibas and Hameron should all go close.
THE INSIDE MAIL FOR CANTERBURY
RACE 1
Sweet Baby Boom is the most experienced horse in the field and has had two runs at this track already. She should enjoy getting onto a drier track than she’s raced on to date. Jaameelati looked good enough in her latest lead up trial but she’s be I Am Invincible and the wet track has to be a question mark off two synthetic track trials. The breeding says 1200m might be too short for Monfiducia. Not much went right for Writrose on debut at Muswellbrook and James McDonald is on now. Craig Williams said Kai Tak would’ve taken plenty out of her debut run in a Group 3 race and she’s placed here to win. She didn’t shirt the task late in a much stronger race.
Bet: Kai Tak to win
RACE 2
London ran only a couple of lengths behind star filly Fireburn on debut in January and showed in her recent barrier trial that he was up to winning this race even if he’s drawn awkward. Resonator was no match for Paris Dior in a barrier trial but that’s a good horse he was against and he still ran second in the heat and is well placed here after running in a Group 3 race on debut last year. Hyde comes into this off a six-length barrier trial win when ridden out and he’s had three trials so should be really primed for this.
Bet: London to win
RACE 3
Stormy Legend just keeps running into one better and he’s probably going to have to give them a head start as they go into the home straight. He’s coming into this off a quicker back up which should be seen as a positive. Is Whatafox a false favourite here? She’s been consistent to date and is Stakes placed but this is her first start in Sydney. Naval Seal will enjoy not racing on a bog track for a change and we can see the real him now. Little Lanai looks ready to peak now.
Bet: Stormy Legend to win
RACE 4
Smirk races here for the first time after running on the bigger Newcastle track at her first three career starts. After a last placing on debut she’s defied the punters and ran well above her odds and looks ready to make the jump to city racing. Expect to see an improved Obvious Step now that she’s got her first-up run out of the way. Enduring Night produced a gritty run first-up in a Midway and she’s won twice from four attempts second-up and will really appreciate 1550m where she’s won at twice. Achira drops back in grade while Vittoriosa has the right form around her for this.
Bet: Enduring Night to win
RACE 5
This’llbetheone will appreciate stepping up to 1550m now and he won over 1500m second-up last time in. He was only getting warmed up over the line first-up at 1300m. Za Ceibas jogged over the line to win a Class 1 at Hawkesbury first-up which bodes well for this tougher test. The query might be that he already wants further. The claim gives Barrichello a winnable weight from the inside draw which he can take advantage of like he did in winning here last time.
Bet: Quinella 2, 5
RACE 6
Money From The Sky is the talent in the race but just do himself any favours at the start. If he can position up better than last he’s got the tools to win here after dropping back in grade from a Stakes race. Hameron comes up from Victoria where he raced well in two runs for new trainer Chris Waller and he should enjoy getting up to 1900m. Oceanography is on the way up and did run in a Stakes race last time in. Ita is honest but can’t win one at the moment. Fitness definitely isn’t an issue.
Bet: Money From The Sky each way
RACE 7
Rubinocchi has drawn wide but has the speed to get across them and she’s produced some of her best runs fresh and if she gets across with relative ease, she puts herself in the box seat to win. Rapid Response has the inside gate and will be right on the pace and there for the fight in the straight. She’s third-up now and there should be excuses. Broken Hill won here two runs back and Team Hawkes has put the winkers on the colt for the first time. This is a tough race. Rifles is the one at odds to consider.
Bet: Broken Hill to win
RACE 8
The Art Of Flying won here with a bit in hand last time and beat a horse that’s since come out and won well at Kembla Grange. He’s drawn awkward which is the issue. Pleading has never missed a placing to date but face its biggest test now in town for the first time and she deserves to be here. Ka Bling doesn’t mid tight-turning tracks so don’t fear him racing at Canterbury for the first time.
Bet: The Art Of Flying to win
