CANTERBURY
BEST BET
Race 6, No.4: MISS EINSTEIN
While this looks like a race with a stack of chances in it, she looks primed to be winning now off two great efforts this time in and she now goes up to her best trip from a good gate.
NEXT BEST
Race 8, No.10: WINDSWEEP
I loved her lead up trial and she has favourable wet track stats and has performed well fresh in the past and might be able to knock off the favourite here.
QUADDIE
Race 5: 1, 2, 5
Race 6: 2, 4, 7
Race 7: 2, 8, 9, 13
Race 8: 7, 10, 12
JOCKEY TO WATCH
Hugh Bowman could have an evening out with virtually all his rides being genuine winning hopes. His rides from tricky gates will be key on Son Of Emperor, Zelago and Atlantic Seas.
SCONE
BEST BET
Race 3, No.3: SPELLCATCHER
He looked like the winner a long way from home first-up which is always a good sign when they’re going up in grade and he’s under good care and they’ve taken their time with him.
TRAINER TO WATCH
Kris Lees will fancy winning three races here with Lady Chartwell, Spellcatcher and either Snitzari or Excelness in the last.
THE INSIDE MAIL FOR CANTERBURY
RACE 1
There’s no doubt that Miss Delia is knocking on the door and is better than her record (9-0:0:3) suggests. She gets the good run from the inside draw and is rock-hard fit for this and a win isn’t far away. Son Of Emperor put in a much-improved second-up run over 1900m at Gosford and shouldn’t mind getting his toe into the ground now with the lightest weight on his back as Hugh Bowman takes over which is a big boost because he raced green under and apprentice last time and it cost him the win. Chappelli ran above his odds here on a Heavy 10 on debut and he likely strikes similar conditions here and is a natural improver off the debut effort but is drawn awkward.
Bet: Son Of Emperor to win
RACE 2
Party For One was doing better than anything late when she was produced here first-up on a Heavy 10 surface. She ran on well late on debut before going for a spell so we don’t know what kind of second-up horse she will be yet. Fearnought will get the run of the race here and a drying day leading up to this race will help her a lot as the tongue tie goes on for the first time. Falsetto should be coming back a better horse and will be nice and forward for this assignment fresh.
Bet: Quinella 5, 6
RACE 3
Broken Hill just got worn down late here on debut at fortnight ago and he looks like the type who will take plenty out of it. Barrier one just helps him get to the front a little easier and Hugh Bowman now jumps on. There are more positives for the Lonhro colt now. Pizarro is another improver at start two after running into what could be a very smart horse on debut at Hawkesbury. He’ll appreciate a little more ground too. Tuhinga went well here first-up last time in while the Freedman brothers have added the blinkers to Estonia for the first time after three-straight seconds.
Bet: Broken Hill to win
RACE 4
There’s no doubt that Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have brought Witsabouthim up here looking for a wet track. They do this often and being by Savabeel, he’ll lap up the wet ground and also the 1900m. Made By Khan is putting together a good record and Adam Duggan has brought him to town at the right time, third-up off a win and being an on-pacer he should be suited here. Dream Maiden was a good winner here two weeks ago and beat home a horse that’s since come out and won during the week.
Bet: Witsabouthim to win
RACE 5
Conscript has been placed well here as he goes through the grades with an inside gate, apprentice’s claim and an attractive racing pattern to suit this circuit. He’s had two soft track wins as well and will be in this form a long time. Shadow Bridge hasn’t won here but does like the track and may fight for the lead. Key Largo should’ve beaten it last start though after it got interfered with at the top of the Gosford straight before storming home and he likes in wet.
Bet: Key Largo to win
RACE 6
Miss Einstein can be closer in the run now; she loves the track and distance as well as wet ground. It all shapes up well for her third-up in a pretty competitive race. Heza Gentleman is on fire at the moment off two wins at the track and distance of late and gets into this with just 54.5kg on his back. Scott Singleton wants his horse Rich And Shameless to follow Heza Gentleman in the run while Banger has been here once before for a very good run and a horse like Monegal can’t be ruled out either along with a stack of them.
Bet: Miss Einstein to win
RACE 7
Kibosh has only run worse than second once in eight runs. She loves wet ground and although this is a fair bit short of her best trip, she can do something here at decent odds because she can do well fresh over shorter trips. Atlantic Seas has it all in front of her after a debut win in June in Victoria before having a stable change to Chris Waller and the barrier trial was good enough to suggest she’s spelled well. Telluride looks like she’s a loaded spring heading into this first-up run off some good trial form and you can’t knock the first-up win of Sneaky Page here when she ran away with it.
Bet: Kibosh each way
RACE 8
Kris Lees has got Miracle Day winning since arriving at his stable with four placings from six runs in Victoria and they’ve been pretty dominant wins so coming to town shouldn’t daunt him even if he didn’t beat much last time out. Nikau hasn’t been here yet but she’s bred to love it heavy and will probably sit off the speed and look to come over the top of them and by now we’ll know if that’s possible. Windsweep’s trial looked very nice and she goes well fresh and second-up so expect some good performances in the next few weeks.
Bet: Windsweep to win
