THE INSIDE MAIL FOR WYONG
RACE 1
Dobbin is the second-best son of Zariz to race in these colours behind Shiraz. He has a bit to do to level up that horse too being a 14-start maiden but he is a better horse than that. Still, it is a concern that he doesn’t know how to win a race but surely he gets his opportunity here fourth-up with a good draw and a great jockey. Lunch Attack is a locally trained mare who is very fit. Can’t say she’s not in the perfect race herself. Ditto for Aussie Linbergh.
Bet: Dobbin to win
RACE 2
The Replicant is a NZ-bred gelding. In fact, you don’t get more Kiwi than this guy. His first three dams are by O’Reilly, Savabeel and Centaine and he’s a relative of Alamosa. As for how he runs, well, he was pretty good at the first prep and has been readied for this with a couple of unhurried trials. Twelve Hours is a two-year-old but not far off being three and is an August foal if that helps any. Bottom line is, she ran a ripper race at the midweeks last start.
Bet: The Replicant to win, quinella 7,12
RACE 3
Harapan has been costly at times but he’s had some excuses many of those same times as well. Despite him being a nine-start maiden, he has gone down fighting mostly. At the end of the day, he finds himself in a suitable race; perfect trip, right track, right jockey. Up to the horse now. Pokerjack has finished runner-up back-to-back to back leading into this race which by any measure is considerably weaker than probably all three of this guy’s last outings.
Bet: Harapan to win, box trifecta 1,2,4,9
RACE 4
Valoria is by Maurice of Bacarella who was placed in the Silver Shadow and Furious Stakes. Valoria was $5 into $4 on debut at Canterbury on June 8 and ran a massive race to be beaten a neck from barrier 10 of 10 no less. Speaking of barriers, the local Fielding will greatly appreciate 3 of 10 rather than 8 of 8 the last time he raced here and almost won. Miss Mya, the Tait/Quinton filly has trialled like she has talent.
Bet: Valoria to win, box trifecta 1,2,4,6
RACE 5
Count On Me is a typical Reliable Man, in colour at least being grey but this John O’Shea-trained three-year-old is going to train on and winning his share of 2000m races for as far as the eye can see. He gets the maiden out of the way here and now. Riccos was $34 on Wednesday. I don’t think he can beat Count On Me but instead take some of $7 the place. Riccos ran a huge race at $51 here two weeks ago.
Bet: Count On Me to win, Riccos to place, exacta/duet 5,14
RACE 6
Denarau is a So You Think filly; her third dam won the French Oaks. As for Denarau, she will turn four in six weeks’ time or thereabouts so she won’t have won any classics. That said, she might very well be winning stakes-races say a mile and upwards in the next season or two if her maiden win here was too be believed. That is to say, she won like the proverbial ‘good horse’ that day. Kristen Buchanan would probably argue the same for her Capitalist son Oakfield Storm who has it all ahead of him.
Bet: Denarau to win, exacta 5 to beat 2
RACE 7
Adios Steve races in the Diatribe (and Curtis Island) colours. This flashy Storm Cat-style of gelding was always going to run well at Gosford first-up and he did; beaten a tally-ho that day. In terms of ‘second-up’ the Allan Denham-trained galloper gas placed at all three of them. Running Bear, the cleverly-named daughter of Your Song, is a very consistent mare whose record reads as two wins, four seconds and a third from 12 starts. You could argue the case that her best run was her last run when second in that Highway.
Bet: Adios Steve to win, box trifecta 3,5,10,13
RACE 8
Siyata has raced twice on Heavy tracks; beaten 35-lengths at Haydock at the first one and then six at Scone at the second one. That run at Scone on Cup Day by the way was her Australian debut where she was $4.60 to $6. Have to forgive her on the Heavy 8 and it is imperative to note that she has trialled since - and won. Tocomah, the half to Yankees, the son of Mine Two and the ‘nephew’ of Spright has got more than a dash of X-Factor.
Bet: Siyata to win, quinella 3,5
