Jockey suspended over horse punch

APPRENTICE jockey Dylan Caboche has apologised for punching a horse at Port Lincoln on Wednesday, saying his actions ‘weren’t the greatest’.

Caboche was suspended for two weeks for the shocking incident which made headlines around the country. The 22-year-old dismounted his ride in the second race, $101 chance She’s Reneldasgirl, after the filly became unsettled and reared. Seemingly frustrated by the horse’s behaviour, the apprentice rider then struck the horse in the girth area.

“My actions weren’t the greatest,” Caboche told Channel 7. Striking a horse is obviously not the right way to go about things. It was a brain fade and it shouldn’t have happened.”

She’s Reneldasgirl, who is trained by Port Augusta horseman Allan Jarvis, ran eighth in the $13,000 race, beaten more than 14 lengths.

Caboche, who is based in Adelaide and recently rode his 100th winner, had his jockey’s licence suspended for two weeks by Thoroughbred Racing SA stewards on a misconduct charge.

The penalty runs from midnight on November 17 to midnight on December 1. There are eight race meetings programmed in SA during that time.

Caboche could reasonably be expected to miss at least 30 rides during his suspension. In SA, jockeys receive a $170 fee for each race ride.

Caboche had seven rides at the Port Lincoln meeting, winning the last race on Slide Of Hand.

“TRSA does not condone and will not tolerate such behaviour and it is hoped this penalty — which will remain on the rider’s record and will impact his earning ability — will send a strong signal to others,” a TRSA spokesman said.

In a similar incident in Victoria in August, apprentice jockey Brandon Stockdale was fined $500 after striking his horse in the stomach area after it had finished seventh in a race at Sandown.
