Inside Mail and The Judgement: Expects give their final word on Rosehill Gardens

Punters have flocked to a highly promising three-year-old and an impressive last start winner at Rosehill on Saturday.

The uncertainty over which races high profile dual acceptors De An Andretti, Wicklow and Easifar will contest hasn’t stifled betting in the build-up to the Rosehill Gardens meeting on Saturday.

Boom filly De An Andretti is entered for races two and three on the program but TAB Fixed Odds spokesman Andrew Georgiou said punters are still investing on both races.

“With De An Andretti, there was interest in her for both races when markets opened on Wednesday,” Georgiou said.

“But since Wednesday, there has been consistent support for De An Andretti for race two and the money on her for race three has dried up.”

De An Andretti remains favourite for both races as was Wicklow before the Chris Waller stable scratching the in-form galloper on Friday from race 8 to start in race 9.

“We had some money for Wicklow in race 8 but when he was taken out of that race on Friday, all the money has come for Naval Seal who is into $2.80 favourite,” Georgiou said.

“Wicklow is favourite at $3.80 for race nine but this is one of the most open betting races on the program with punters looking for value from runners at each way odds.

“Easifar is also in two races but because she is sixth emergency for race 8, there has been no money for her. We are holding some good bets against her in race nine.”

Cross Talk was another dual acceptor (race 8 and 9) and was prominent in betting for each race but the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable has scratched the gelding from both, deciding against starting the gelding at Rosehill.

PRICE CHECK

Hardware Lane (race 5) has been well backed in a race where there has also been good money for Shades Of Rose and Petulant. Hardware Lane has firmed from $16 to $8 after bets of $1,000 at $9, $500 at $9, $200 e/w at $11 at $3.10 and $200 e/w at $16/$4.

TRIAL POINTERS

De An Andretti (race 2 and 3) makes her much anticipated return to racing today after being sidelined since her Furious Stakes appearance at Royal Randwick on September 4 last year. The Ron Quinton-trained filly earned her tilt at Group 2 level after an awesome debut win at Hawkesbury at her first racetrack appearance in April earlier in 2021. A sister to Libertini, De An Andretti has looked in every way back to the peak of her powers with a couple of eye-catching trials at Randwick last month, beating Kallos and new stablemate Leo in her most recent heat on June 14.

Shades Of Rose (race 5) is another boom three-year-old filly in action at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. This Bjorn Baker trained bay is unbeaten in her three starts to date, the first two of those were at Bathurst. Noticeably fast, Shades of Rose set a new course record time for the 1100m in her second Bathurst win which preceded her most recent outing namely a win at Canterbury on February 25. Baker’s Rubick filly showed that she is ready to take up where he left on judging in her commanding near five-lengths win in a 900m heat at Rosehill on June 20.

SECTIONAL STARS

Kanazawa (race 6) is a son of Lonhro and Darley’s epic broodmare Kanzan whose other offspring include the stakes-winner Ranier (also by Lonhro and the stakes-placed Katalin). Kanazawa has always had a bit of X-factor about him and has clearly come back in great form with back-to-back placings at Royal Randwick when coming from well back each time. His first run was over 1200m, the one after that was 1400m which sets the James Cummings trained three-year-old perfectly for Saturday’s 1500m mission.

Fastconi (race 10) is a Chris Waller-trained son of Nature Strip’s sire, Nicconi, but unlike the Everest and Royal Ascot winner, this bay is known to frequently give away huge head starts in his races only to flash up late, more often than not, once the race is all over. That was the case again at the gelding’s 24th start when he made more ground than anything else in the 1200m Benchmark 78 when runner-up to Waihaha Falls who is also scheduled to contest Saturday’s wide open ‘Get Out Stakes’.

BEST BET

Shalstar (race 1) is a promising filly who scored her third win from just four starts (plus a debut second placing) when she comfortably won on the Kensington track when resuming last month. She will strip fitter for that run, drawn to get the run of the race and looks the one to beat again. The only concern is she is untested on rain-affected going.

VALUE BET

Petulant (race 5) is fitter for two runs back from a spell and hasn’t missed a top two finish in her five-start career. The wet track conditions won’t be an issue and she has the early tactical speed to negate her awkward barrier. She’s into $4.40 in latest betting but still represents value in an open race.

THE JUDGMENT

ROSEHILL GARDENS

Race 8: Fab Industrial Logistics Hcp (1500m)

Richard Haynes (Sky Sports Radio): “We just don’t know what track conditions will be like by this stage of the meeting. With Wicklow electing to run in Race 9, his stablemate Naval Seal now appeals as the horse to beat. He’s down in the weights, has that bit of upside about him, and if he holds his form, he is the one. La Chevalee is a quality mare, she’s in Sydney hoping for the rain to arrive, and if it does, they’ll know she’s there. Cadre Nu Noir has some class, he’s big odds and this is very suitable second up. If Easifar runs, she’s in good form and will get a great run from the barrier.”

Glenn Munsie (Sky Racing): “I’m going to have a throw at the stumps here with the rain arriving and the track being affected. Cadre Du Noir was a sneaky run first up behind Jojo Was A Man at Randwick and will certainly appreciate a step up to 1800m here. That race has seen three subsequent winners along with a couple racing well at their next starts. I do think the race has a long tail and it shouldn’t be in it.”

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Naval Seal steps up in grade here but his last start win was excellent and he will only have to carry 51kg after the claim for Tyler Schiller. There has been good each specking for La Chevalee who was poor last start but should enjoy the heavy conditions.”

Michael Sullivan (bookie): “Market will be dictated to by where Wicklow ends up (he will run in race 9). Away from him there’s been a nibble for La Chevalee ($10-$8.50), likely due to the expected rain.”

Andrew Georgiou (TAB): “Naval Seal was one of the first horses backed on Wednesday and holds more money than any other runner at this point.”

Verdict: Naval Seal

Race 9: Vale Nick Moriatis Hcp (1500m)

Richard Haynes (Sky Sports Radio): “Wicklow runs here and is clear favourite. While he’s a great chance, I quite like the chances of Irish Legend. His first Australian run was a beauty, and his form in the UK says he’s even better second up. He gets a good run from the barrier and goes on top. Yiyi is ready to go first up, he’s trialled well and won’t mind a wet track. Wicklow will be charging late, the potential testing conditions very much to his liking. If Alcyone runs, I’ll be wary.”

Glenn Munsie (Sky Racing): “Chris Waller with close on half the field here and where does Wicklow go? Would definitely be with him if he does finish here with only 55kg and still on the up despite jumping from benchmark 78 to 88 staying at 1500m. Came from last to scoop them up on a day where on pacers were suited second-up after 11 months off and only one trial so still improvement to come. Wet no worry. Of the others stablemate Easifar is ready now with two runs under her belt and a senior rider on.

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Irish Legend was impressive in his first Australian attempt and I think he will take a lot of improvement from that run. Drops 4.5kg here and Kieran McEvoy will have options from barrier 2. Easifar next best who should be rock hard fit third-up.”

Michael Sullivan (bookie): “Good race, again with dual acceptors. I really liked the run of Irish Legend first up in Australia. Got cramped for room at a vital time but was very strong through the line. Would have liked him up in distance but the rain may turn this into a slog, and he’ll be stronger than a lot of these late. Drawn well also to find a nice spot in run. Each-way for me.”

Andrew Georgiou (TAB): “Not a great deal of confident about in this with some specking at odds for Love Tap, Yiyi and New Arrangement.”

Verdict: Wicklow

Race 10: Schweppes Hcp (1300m)

Richard Haynes (Sky Sports Radio): “Waihaha Falls can confirm himself a horse going places. A wet track is certainly a tick, Reece Jones just has to give him the right ride from a potentially tricky barrier, and he’ll be very hard to beat. Looking outside the box, and if the predicted rain does arrive, Peyton Place races well fresh will be in it for a long way. Tamerlane looks to have returned in good order; Titanium Power has the big weight but he’s just so genuine.”

Glenn Munsie (Sky Racing): “Respect for Fastconi here at the odds on the back of his last start effort chasing home Waihaha Falls at Randwick. Just thought the $15 about him was well overs compared to his conqueror, who is the current $3.80 favourite. The 3kg weight swing will certainly help along with the edge off track.”

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Hard not to be taken by the first up effort of Waihaha Falls. Has not won second up previously but he looks a better horse now and will enjoy the wet conditions. Rubamos has been well supported but I’m not sure he is a wet tracker and I’m happy to take him on.”

Michael Sullivan (bookie): “Hard to oppose Waihaha Falls who looks the deserved favourite off a stylish return. The step up in distance suits and is a winner on rain affected going. Papal Warrior was heavily backed 1st up and I think represents some value at $26.”

Andrew Georgiou (TAB): “Waihaha Falls is easily the most popular runner while there has also been early backing for Titanium Power.”

Verdict: Waihaha Falls
