All-Star Mile 2020: Katelyn Mallyon picks her field for the $5m race at Caulfield

Former group 1 jockey and Herald Sun racing expert Katelyn Mallyon reveals her perfect line-up for the $5m All-Star Mile at Caulfield.

Sky Racing news update 31.1.2020

The 2020 All-Star Mile is the perfect stage for a bumper crop of Australian and New Zealand three year-old thoroughbreds to shine against the older horses.

Is Alligator Blood really that good? Or will Kiwi rising star Catalyst set the new benchmark.

Add Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth, Cox Plate runner-up Castelvecchio and exciting South Australian colt Dalasan into the $5m All-Star Mile at Caulfield on March 14 and it is already a race not to be missed.

VOTE NOW: 2020 ALL-STAR MILE

New Zealand’s queen of the turf Melody Belle, a winner of 10 Group 1 races, and inaugural All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey must be included, along with the Blue Army’s star Alizee.

Golden Eagle winner Kolding and Heart Of Puissance could be anything, while consistent galloper Scales Of Justice and Begood Toya Mother will keep the field honest up on the speed.

KATELYN’S ALL-STAR CAST

1 ALLIGATOR BLOOD (QLD)

Trainer: David Vandyke. Votes: 7630
High quality gelding who deserves to be on top after his dominant Magic Millions Guineas win. Beaten a nose in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), the only blemish to an otherwise flawless record. He's a versatile and tough racehorse that gives his all every time.

2 STAR MISSILE (VIC)

Trainer: Greg Eurell. Votes: 6722
Lightly-raced four year-old that really showed his true quality last preparation with solid wins. He has a massive stride and appreciates room so will need the right run to run well.

3 MELODY BELLE (NZ)

Trainer: Jamie Richards. Votes: 4832
10-time Group 1 winner including four at 1600m. She came to Melbourne last year and showed how good she really is by coming from last to win the Group 1 Empire Rose at Flemington. Her chances will greatly improve if it happens to be a wet track.

LATEST BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS

4 KOLDING (NSW)

Trainer: Chris Waller. Votes: 3974
Kept improving and raising the bar last preparation. His win in the Epsom was strong, however, his win in the Golden Eagle was simply incredible. He found trouble and still overcame it. A very adaptable horse that will be heading to the race in very good order.

5 HEART OF PUISSANCE (VIC)

Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace. Votes: 2596
Lightly-raced colt who progressed quickly to compete in the Sandown Guineas where narrowly beaten. On speed horse who glides over the ground effortlessly. He looks to have a nice future but this will be his hardest test in his short career.

6 MR QUICKIE (VIC)

Trainer: Phillip Stokes. Votes: 2212
Group 1 Queensland Derby winner has tremendous amount of ability. He can reel off fast times but does find himself getting back over the shorter trips. I’d imagine him going into this race on the fresh side so he can produce his fast acceleration in the end. He will be hoping for a fast run race.

7 CATALYST (NZ)

Trainer: Clayton Chipperfield. Votes: 2247
The Kiwi star is starting to take the world by storm. He has a massive will to win and can find his way out of any trouble. He can race on the speed or off the speed. Nothing seems to phase him and he looks to be the most exciting horse in the race this year.

8 BEGOOD TOYA MOTHER (VIC)

Trainer: Daniel Bowman. Votes: 2193
Group 1 winner at Caulfield over the 1400. He is a tough on speed galloper who I think has a chance to run well in a tough race like this due to his pattern of racing. He does seem to run out a strong 1400 so he will need to control this race to win.

9 ARISTIA (VIC)

Trainer: Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra. Votes: 2507
VRC Oaks winner of 2018. She doesn’t win often but she always runs well. She has plenty of ability and I hope to see her ridden more forward and that will increase her chances.

10 MYSTIC JOURNEY (TAS)

Trainer: Adam Trinder. Votes: 1905
Winner of the inaugural All Star Mile last year at Flemington. High quality mare who wasn’t beaten far in the Cox Plate behind Japanese champion Lys Gracieux. I think 1600m is her best distance. She can win again.

WILDCARDS

ALIZEE (NSW)

Trainer: James Cummings. Votes: 119
Three-time Group 1-winning mare who ran third in this race last year. She loves racing at Caulfield, which will suit her better and I think she deserves another chance in the race.

SUPER SETH (VIC)

Trainer: Anthony Freedman. Votes: 1241
The only horse to have gotten past Alligator Blood in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. He has a big heart and extraordinary turn of foot over the 1600m. He will make the race interesting if he gets a run.

SCALES OF JUSTICE (VIC)

Trainer: Lindsay Smith. Votes: 364
One of the most consistent horses going around. He sits on speed and will certainly put some pace in the race and be very hard to run down. He has a liking to Caulfield and is a Group 1 winner at 1600m in Perth.

CASTELVECCHIO (NSW)

Trainer: Richard Litt. Votes: 358
Unassuming type of horse when he races, however, when he launches he gives most horses windburn. Showed us his powerful engine in the Cox Plate when second to Lys Gracieux. Dropping back to the mile but he might just be good enough to mow them all down.

DALASAN (SA)

Trainer: Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas
Didn’t see the best of him in the Caulfield Guineas but he responded next start winning the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington. Still maturing and can do a bit wrong in his races but has the ability.

KATELYN'S EARLY CALL

1st Catalyst
2nd Alligator Blood
3rd Kolding
4th Scales Of Justice

** Public voting on the All-Star Mile closes on Sunday, February 16.

** The wildcards will be confirmed by Monday, March 2.
