Southport Sharks QAFLW coach Matthew Lappin has put rival coaches on red alert as he promised more high-scoring games from his side in the wake of their record-breaking 219-point round 1 win

When Lappin made the switch to Southport during the off-season, he made one major promise - to bring exciting an exciting, fast-paced style of football which would lead to higher scores.

It took just one game for the former St Kilda and Carlton AFL star to fulfill his promise as Southport earned its biggest win in QAFLW history.

“We are really trying to speed up the way we played, we feel like we’re gonna be comfortable playing fast and it’s going to challenge our opposition in that space,” Lappin said.

“That’s also gonna lead to more scoreboard opportunities.”

With 219 points on the board and 15 of the 21 players on the team sheet kicking at least one goal, it comes as no surprise that Lappin was over the moon with his side’s performance.

“We just had a really good performance from all the girls, everyone played their role,” he said.

“In a result like that sometimes you can get a bit individual and a bit selfish but I thought our girls were really terrific and shared the footy and played the right way which was a big focus for us heading into the game.”

After building a 118-point lead at the main break, Lappin opted to move the magnets around and gave some of the defenders a greater role closer to the action throughout the second half.

The moves also helped veteran Megan Hunt kick her 100th career goal, sparking celebrations across the board.

“We were able to put Megsy (Megan Hunt) one of our experienced players, she was chasing her 100th goal and she’s been playing in our back half,” Lappin said.

“We were able to put her forward there at one stage and get her 100th goal and it created a real excitement for the group.”

The Sharks will take on Maroochydore at home on Saturday for round 2 of the QAFLW season.
