Decades ago you wouldn’t have caught a rugby player dead in a yoga studio, but a front row prospects at the Alleygators has been told the key to scrum mastery can be found there.
Two-time World Cup Wallaby Scott Sio was a surprise guest at the Palm Beach Currumbin Rugby Club’s online training session this week, answering questions and dispensing advice to players.
Gators front rower Lachlan Currie said the Brumbies prop’s practical advice could help the club in their return to first grade in 2020.
“He gave really great answers that we could actually use, practical things,” Currie said.
“What I enjoyed was when we asked him rugby questions the switch went on and he has technical, well-spoken and explained things well.

“When others asked lighter questions he switched to just a mate you’d see on the street.
“We got to see Scott Sio the person not just Scott Sio the Wallaby.”
Currie benefited most from the impromptu Q&A session as a recent convert to the front row from flanker, just as Sio did when he was coached by Gators coach Jed Hogan in Sydney.
“I asked him about switching from the back row to the front and he gave me some great tips,” Currie said.
“I’m six-foot-three so I struggle with hip flexor movement and getting low in scrums, so he told me to work on my overhead squats in the gym and do yoga to help with flexibility.
“He said if you can’t get down and be stable and strong you’ll get injured.
“It was really good to see someone his size do it and practice what he preaches.”
Sio was the latest in a string of high-profile guests to join Alleygators training in recent weeks, with Australian Sevens forwards Lachie Anderson and Boyd Killingworth previous guests.
