Test rugby is expected to return to the SCG in July when the Wallabies host England in a three-match series.

The Wallabies are set to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the first time in 36 years when they host England in a three-Test series in July.

Australia’s series against the Eddie Jones-coached England is likely to start at Perth’s Optus Stadium on July 2 before continuing a week later at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

The series concludes on July 16 in Sydney, and it’s set to be announced on Tuesday that the third Test will take place at the SCG, a venue that hasn’t hosted the Wallabies since Australia’s 26-0 win over Argentina on July 12, 1986.

“We talk a lot about wanting to challenge ourselves against the best teams in the world and three Test matches in a row against England is the perfect opportunity to do that,” Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said.

“It’s always special when Australia and England meet in the sporting arena and we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of gold jerseys in the stands during July.”

Rugby Australia CEO Andy Marinos said. “The rivalry between Australia and England is one that runs deep across many sports, and we look forward to writing another chapter in its history this July.”

Australia’s women’s rugby team, the Wallaroos, are also set to play in two Test matches next month.

It’s understood they will meet Fiji on May 6 at Suncorp Stadium as part of a double-header that will include a Super Rugby Pacific men’s clash between the Queensland Reds and the Highlanders.

The Wallaroos will then remain in Queensland for a Test on May 10 against Japan at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

Wallaroos coach Jay Tregonning said the matches were “crucial” to his side’s Women’s World Cup preparations.

“Playing two strong nations like Japan and Fiji is extremely important to gain experience as a group against different styles of rugby,” Tregonning said.

“Seeing an expansive style of play has been a delight to watch from the Fijiana Drua this year in Super W and we are sure to see the same when we face Fiji’s national side in this series.”
