REIGNING Gold Coast leading tryscorer Blake Griffin can hear the call of Premier Rugby but wants at least one more premiership with the Knights before he’ll consider vacating his wing.

Since his debut in 2015, the 26-year-old has scored 115 tries, including seven in five matches this season.

He will go down as one of the greatest finishers Gold Coast rugby has seen but oppositions have not seen the last of him just yet. Griffin has been a one-club player thus far but harbours ambitions to test his skills at the next level.

The interest from Premier rugby is reciprocal but Griffin’s loyalty belongs to Colleges for at least one more swan-song season.

“I do have ambitions to play Premier Grade but that decision is for next year,” he said.

“I wouldn’t mind competing at that level, that’s a high goal of mine, but just for this year I want to focus on winning another one with Knights and then if that opportunity comes, it comes.

“I’m 27 at the end of the year so I’ve got plenty to give.

“I’ve got at least four years left in me.”

Griffin crossed for 28 tries in his second season in 2016 and reached the 20-try mark again in 2018 (22) and 2020 (20).

His single-game record is seven tries in a 117-15 belting of Bond Pirates in 2018, and a strong start to this season has Griffin eyeing off even more against that same opposition on Saturday.

“I’m hoping I can (beat my record),” he said.

“I seem to find myself in the right spot at the right time, every time.

“My teammates know, in space or close to the line, I’m a 90 per cent chance of getting over the line.

“They give me the ball and I try create something out of nothing.”

Colleges are undefeated after five weeks.

COOMERA flanker Matt Wallis will become the first player in club history to play 150 Gold Coast rugby union matches in the orange and black when he leads out his team against visiting Palm Beach Currumbin on Saturday.

The Englishman joined the club in 2012 when his son signed on to the junior program and has grown with the Crushers from third grade battlers to a finals threat in first grade almost a decade later.

With his son now approaching 18 years of age, coach James Askew believes the 42-year-old’s ambition to play alongside his boy will keep him on the paddock for years to come.

“His son I believe is 16 or 17 so he’s probably a year or two off senior rugby so I think the 250 games is on the cards,” Askew said.

“Matt has always been our captain, he’s a natural leader and that’s the way he plays.

“He’s going to be absolutely vital for us playing Palm Beach.”

The Crushers are one of five teams battling for the final playoff spot, including PBC.

Askew said the match was a must-win for their season.

The reserves games begin at 2pm while the first grade action begin at 3.30pm. Here are the fixtures we will be bringing you.
