Health Check: Revealing the financial of every Coast rugby club

Leaders from the Gold Coast’s eight first grade rugby union clubs have shed light on their financial positions during the coronavirus shutdown.

Leaders from the Gold Coast’s eight first grade rugby union clubs have declared their financial positions are stable despite pressure from the coronavirus shutdown.

Representatives from all first grade clubs were asked to rate their financial position on a scale from healthy to stable to sinking in a Bulletin survey of the competition this week.

Clubs reported the slowdown in member sign-on and loss of expected canteen and bar sales had taken a bite out of operating budgets but no club said they were in danger of collapse or withdrawing from the top flight when competition returns.

“We’re between stable and healthy,” president Jason Teren said.

“It’s been a slight blessing not to have the season start because we’ve had no outgoings, which has been good for us.

“We’ve recovered dramatically from our financial position last year and I’m full of confidence we’ll get through this.”

NERANG BULLS: HEALTHY

“We’re in a healthy position,” Bulls president Heath Claydon said.

“We’ve got enough money to get through until kids start registering again and the competition gets going.

“We hadn’t collected many fees due to the shutdown so we’re waiting for the kids.

“Our uniforms are due to arrive soon so it should fit in nicely and we’ll go from there.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS: STABLE

“We’re currently stable, as a lot of other clubs are in the same case,” vice president Josh Scott said.

“Lots of things have been put on hold with restrictions and we’d made payments for the upcoming season.

“Financially we’re sound with the support of sponsors which has been great.

“Even though they’re finding it difficult we’ve maintained our relationships with them and when the season kicks on we’ll forge ahead.

HELENSVALE HOGS: HEALTHY

“We are doing well,” president Karl Wernham said.

“We had purchased ball, tape, kit for the season prior to it being postponed so we are ready to go from mid-July when the season starts.”

BOND PIRATES: STABLE

“The Pirates currently are stable,” president Sean Wilson said.

“We’ve got plans either way, the meter will lean further towards ‘healthy’ if the season kicks off as planned.

“All our major outgoing costs were committed to significantly early in the season but in the worst case (where no rugby is played) we’re in a position where we’ll be solid.”

SURFERS PARADISE DOLPHINS: STABLE

“We’re stable,” president Kim Gerry said.

“We’ve got a solid committee and a good treasurer so we try to stay on top of our finances most of the year.

“We’re just in the process of starting but we won’t need to order too much kit this year because it will probably be a shorter season.

“We’ve been impacted severely, we haven’t had our bar or our canteen and our subs are done, but everyone has been affected by that.”

“We’re stable,” president Jason Gallagher said

“We’ve been able to stabilise our position, obviously we’ve been in a strong position to work ourselves out of some significant debt.

“Those plans have continued and we’ve clawed our way back to be in a far more sustainable position.

“We’re looking now to be prudent and careful in our return to ensure we don’t make any bad financial decisions.”

COOMERA CRUSHERS: STABLE

“We’d definitely be steady at this point,” vice president Jason Croll said.

“This has come at an unfortunate time for us because we were looking at being able to invest in our club in great new ways and had all that funded.

“We’ve received membership dues and sponsorship money and we’ll be able to provide a return to those stakeholders soon.

“We were progressing well with cash position and memberships, certainly in a steady position.

“We’ll be ready to go and excited to go – provided we can get some gametime we’re going to be okay.”
