Harry Wilson commits himself to the Reds and the Wallabies until the end of 2029

The Wallabies captain wants the `best years’ of his career to be with the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies.

National captain Harry Wilson has recommitted to Queensland and Australian rugby until the end of 2029 in a huge boost for the Reds and the Wallabies.

On the eve of the Reds’ opening Super Rugby Pacific game of the season against Moana Pasifika at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, Wilson – who was off contract at the end of 2025 – has signed a new four-year deal with Rugby Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union.

“Initially the plan was to go through to the end the World Cup year in 2027, but I want to be playing in Australia and Queensland for what I’d say are the best years of my career,” Wilson said.

“Come that World Cup I would have just turned 28, and I know deep down that I really wouldn’t have wanted to leave.

“I would have wanted to keep trying to represent Queensland and the Wallabies, so once it came up for that (four-year) length. I was stoked with it and happy with that option … it was a no-brainer for me.”

Wilson said he had not been in a hurry to sign a new deal but was glad the contract had been secured so he could concentrate on his Reds and Wallabies duties this year without constantly being quizzed about his future.

“It’s really nice to get it finalised before our (Queensland’s) first game,” the No.8 said.

“I wasn’t really speaking to my manager too much about it because I knew he was going about his business.

“He knew I wanted to stay. I just wanted to get the details which suited me.

“Now I can just focus on my footy and not have to worry about that.”

Wilson’s immediate concern is getting the better of Moana Pasifika No.8 and All Blacks star Ardie Savea on Friday night.

“I can’t wait. He’s been one of the best No.8s in the world for many years, so any opportunity I get to go up against him is always exciting and always a good challenge,” Wilson said.

“You relish the chance to play against those type of players. It’s also his leadership and the type of person that he is. He’s very much a ‘follow me’ leader.

“If I can do a job on him and limit him as much as I can, I know it will help our team immensely.”

Wilson said the Reds were “desperate” to go deeper into the finals series this season after being knocked out in the quarter-finals for the past two years.

“We want home finals and we want to be there right at the end in the really important games,” he said.

“Last year we definitely improved as a team but we can only keep on improving this year and really set our sights on something special.

“It all starts with us having a good start to the season against Moana Pasifika. We want to set the tone on Friday night.”
