RONDA Rousey has made a name for herself not only as one of the most physically dominant fighters in the UFC, but as someone whose personality comes across so strongly that when she talks, people listen.
Such a trait had to come from somewhere, and not surprisingly, Rousey’s mum has shown a similar passion in speaking her mind.
The 28-year-old fighter’s parent, AnnMaria De Mars, spoke with LatiNation on Tuesday and was extremely vocal when it came to her opinion of Ronda’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan.
“I think Edmond is a terrible coach, and I will say it publicly,” De Mars said.
“I think he’s a terrible coach. I think he hit the lottery when Ronda walked in there.”
De Mars argued that Tarverdyan did little to help her daughter further her career in MMA, as Rousey was already an accomplished combat sports athlete when she first began training with the Southern Californian-based coach.

“She was winning before she ever met him,” De Mars said.
“She probably won 99 per cent of the judo matches she ever fought in. She’d won the Junior Worlds when she was 17. She got a bronze medal in the Olympics. She got a silver medal in the world championships. She was one of the top athletes in the world when she walked in there, and he wouldn’t even give her the time of day for months. Somebody like that is a terrible coach.”
Rousey began training with Tarverdyan in 2010, just a few months prior to her amateur MMA debut. Already with a near mastery in Judo and an Olympic medal around her neck, a 23-year-old Ronda was looking to apply those skills to a new sport.
However the transition was not all smooth sailing, as she struggled to get the attention of the Glendale Fighting Club’s head trainer.
“I’ll be honest: When she came in, I didn’t want to train her because I had my hands full,” Tarverdyan told the “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast.
“I was like, ‘What’s this girl doing? What is she going to do with this? Is she serious? Is she not?’
“After like three, four months of being in the gym, I gave her a few pointers.”
In her recent rant, De Mars spoke angrily of the way the MMA coach neglected her daughter initially, and said she thinks he takes advantage of the fighter’s current status to benefit his own endeavours.
De Mars said the fear of changing her routine is the only thing still tying Rousey to the trainer.
“I think she stays there because it’s like somebody pitches a no-hitter when they’re wearing red underwear, and they wear that red underwear for every day — and I think it’s superstition, and I would caution anybody from going there,” De Mars said.
“And I think it’s bad he uses her to lure people in. And the reason I tell everybody, and I told Ronda, ‘I’m not going to be quiet about this anymore’ — he’s a bad person, and people should not go there.”
Rousey heads to Australia in November to take on Holly Holm as the main card for UFC 193 at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.
For Tarverdyan’s sake, let’s hope he doesn’t cross paths with the disgruntled De Mars in the mean time.
