A much-needed bye is finally upon us after six intense rounds of GCDRU.
While some are eager for the rest, others are gearing up to don the Goast Coast Cyclones jersey and compete in the 2024 South Queensland Championship, to be held at Surfers Paradise May 17-19.
GCDRU Operations Manager Trent MaChong said the region was thrilled to be hosting the event in 2024.
“The South Queensland Championships is a great event comprising of three regions with nine teams from each region equalling 27 teams coming to one venue to compete.
“We have had to travel for the last four years, so we are very excited to put on a strong showing in front of a home crowd,” he said.
“The build-up has been great.”
MaChong labelled 2024 as one of the best lead ups to date, with former mens head coach Adam Fahey’s appointment as Coordinator a pivotal part of that success.
“We, along with the coaches, have been able to piece together some very handy sides that will all put their best foot forward over the weekend.”
On the eve of the event, we asked GCDRU coaches to nominate their biggest hitters in first grade.
Now it’s time to reveal all.

Biggest hitters of GCDRU first grade
Kadison Graham
Position: Centre
Griffith Uni Colleges Knights
Absolutely thrives in contact and is slowly but surely getting back to his best. Sometimes his biggest hits come from his ball running. Graham is an absolute pleasure to coach.
Bailey Bocock and Patrick Barlow
Position: Centre and flyhalf
Surfers Paradise Dolphins
Bocock and Barlow are both solid players that cannot only tackle, but can create something out of nothing on attack.
Luke McKenzie
Flanker
Nerang Bulls
At 39 years of age, McKenzie is one of the cleanest chop tacklers going around the Gold Coast. He’s a black belt in BJJ and it really shows out on the footy field.
Maiz George
Halfback
Nerang Bulls
One of the smallest blokes on the field but definitely one of the biggest hitters. In his rookie season at the club, George has taken a few victims already this season and I’m sure he will be adding to the list.
Nicholas Harrex
Flanker
Nerang Bulls
A Nerang junior back to playing some of his best footy again in 2024, Harrex has always loved the physical side of footy but this year even more so. He had a massive off-season in the gym where he put on mass muscle which has been put on display on the field this season. Harrex was always a great tackler, but with this extra size, he’s putting guys to sleep.
Flynn Carson
Flanker
Helensvale Hogs
He will hit whatever comes his way.
Matty Worland
3-4 years at the club.
Backrow
Bond Pirates
Leads with action from the front and is always calm no matter the situation. Worland is a great example for the young Pirates coming through. He works hard on and off the field and always puts the team and others first.
