Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida cared little that the Inglis Sprint did not carry stakes status but was thrilled when his charge El Morzillo claimed the $1m event at Flemington.
“It’s a million-dollar race so I don’t mind it (was not black type). But I’m really, really pleased for the owners,” Schweida said.
El Morzillo had not won since saluting at her second start at the Sunshine Coast in January last year but prevailed first-up in the Inglis Sprint with Craig Williams in the saddle.
Williams had ridden El Morzillo five previous times for a second in a Group 2 race at Doomben last winter but the knowledge gained on the grey filly proved invaluable as she defeated Daggers by three-quarters of a length.

Schweida said booking Williams was crucial for El Morzillo’s first Melbourne outing as the champion jockey knew the Star Witness filly’s racing habits.
“He’s rode her a fair bit, so he knows all her quirks,” Schweida said.
“It’s really important because she’s very quirky.
“So I know Craig will be thrilled to win this race as much as I am.”

At $50,000, El Morzillo was one of the cheaper buys in the Inglis Sprint, which was restricted to Inglis sale graduates.
The $550,000 winner’s cheque took her stakes tally to more than $900,000 from 12 starts.
Schweida said he could give El Morzillo a chance at Group 1 company during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

“We’ll probably take her home slowly and give her a little ease up and probably get her ready for the Carnival and maybe the Tatts Tiara or some of the other races,” Schweida said.
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained Hot Digity Boom finished third in an improved performance on her unplaced first-up run at Pakenham.
