A horse who acts like a young child on red cordial has delivered Donna Grisedale’s 100th career win as a trainer.
The Coffs Harbour-based trainer was able to share the milestone win with husband and jockey Jon Grisedale who rode Tiomo to victory in Saturday’s Class 1 Handicap (1800m).
“It’s very special. (Moments like that) are few and far between,” Grisedale said.
“We don’t have a lot of horses so the wins don’t come every week like a lot of people. We own him ourselves too so it’s been good.”
Grisedale, 43, started her career in the racing industry as an 18-year-old working at Jack, who trained Melbourne Cup winner Might And Power, and Allan Denham’s Rosehill stables.
She worked as a stablehand, trackwork rider and foreman over 11 years for the Denham’s and went on to be a trackwork rider for Chris Waller at Rosehill before opting to train herself eight years ago.
Grisedale began training at Hawkesbury, shifted to Kembla Grange where she and Jon, 56, spent seven years before moving to Coffs Harbour 12 months ago.
Saturday’s win was the second of Tiomo’s 29-run career and a meaningful one for Grisedale given how difficult it has been to get the horse performing.
“The way he found the line was the most pleasing thing because he has been promising to do that for a while,” Grisedale said.
“Jon knows this horse very well. We have had him from day one. He is the hardest horse I have in work to ride.
“I don’t have to give him any instructions. When you ride the horse every morning and you have him race day you know what you are dealing with.
“Tiomo puts his head up in the air basically trying to touch the stars so his head is in your face the whole way and he doesn’t put it down.
“He is really awkward to ride and he pulls hard. He is very agitated. He is like a young kid on red cordial.
“He is not trouble. He is just a horse who has a lot of quirks that you have to do what he wants to do. You can’t change his routine.”
