Sidekiss continues to exceed expectations with win on the Gold Coast

Apprentice hoop Carly Frater-Hill never thought Sidekiss would run over 1400m but after winning at the distance she is convinced he can go even further.

APPRENTICE hoop Carly Frater-Hill never thought Sidekiss would run over 1400m but after winning at the distance she is convinced he can go even further.

The two-year-old gelding, who jumped at odds of $19, recorded the second win of his career on Saturday at Aquis Park, beating Badoosh by nearly a length to win the QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (1400m).

It followed a slowly improving preparation where the Joel Pengilly-trained Sidekiss has edge closer to victory while increasing the distance he runs.

“It was a brilliant run,” Frater-Hill said.

“I think he was just lacking in fitness in his first couple of runs, we didn’t realise how much work he needed.

“I was quite confident going into (Saturday’s) race because his work has been really good and he has become really fit. I couldn’t believe the price of him.

“We didn’t think he would be a 1400m horse but his last couple of runs he has hit a flat spot mid-race and then hit the line strong at the end.

“Even after (Saturday’s) effort I think he can get a mile.”

Frater-Hill jumped from barrier 11 with Sidekiss and shadowed John Zielke’s Class Of Royalty before storming home for the win.

“It worked out perfectly. I knew there was only one speed horse in the race and that was John Zielke’s who was drawn just inside us,” Frater-Hill said.

“We were drawn a sticky gate and the plan was to follow him across and sit outside him and it worked perfectly.

“He never hit a flat spot and travelled really strong the whole race.”
