Magic Millions 2020: Winx trainer Chris Waller buys horse for $1.05 million

The trainer of legendary mare Winx has headlined the first session of the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale with a $1,050,000 purchase.

THE trainer of legendary mare Winx has headlined the first session of the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale with a $1,050,000 purchase.

Chris Waller, who secured Winx for $230,000 at the same sale in 2013 and went on to win $26,451,174 in prizemoney with the wonder mare, has secured lot 69, a colt bred by Segenhoe Stud from I Am Invincible and out of Adrift.

But is it the next Winx?

“No, it’s a boy,” Waller’s bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster said straight after the sale.

Mulcaster said the stable discovered the colt three weeks ago in the Hunter Valley and expected it to come with a big price tag.

“It was amazing. He came up early enough in the sale and I think by the end of the week he will look pretty good value,” Mulcaster said.

“He takes it all in his stride and that is what we are looking for in a horse.

“We are just looking for an athlete really. They have got to look good at the beginning and then hopefully they can run fast later.”

Mulcaster said the colt would dictate whether it started it’s career as a two-year-old and was targeted for the 2021 Magic Millions carnival.

“The horse will tell us what he wants to do. We will give him all the opportunity, going to Chris Waller so gives him a great start,” Mulcaster said.
