TRAINER Bryan Guy says everything has clicked for Lefkas Island with the filly now in line to become a classy stayer following her second straight win on the Gold Coast.
Premier jockey Dan Griffin told Gold Coast-based Guy Lefkas Island could go longer in their post-race debrief after riding her to victory in the Fillies and Mares Class 1 Handicap (1400m) on Saturday.
Lefkas Island is in the early stages of building a promising record that stands at two wins from three starts.
“She is racing quite good,” Guy said. “It’s hard normally for a maiden three-year-old to go to a Class 1 and beat older horses but she did that.
“There is a little bit of upside to her. Dan Griffin said she will go further so that’s something to look forward to that we didn’t know.”
Lefkas Island hasn’t raced past 1400m but if her bloodlines are anything to go by then the filly should have no problem increasing in distance.
Lefkas Island is a half-sister to the Guy-trained Polynikes who has won over 1800m.
Their dam Athena Mana Mou also enjoyed success, winning three races up to 1650m from seven starts.
Guy said Lefkas Island, a daughter of Love Conquers All, was likely to step up to at least 1800m at her next run.
Lefkas Island found another gear on the straight on Saturday to win by two lengths.
“They walked early but she dashed home and did a very good job,” Guy said.
Lefkas Island finished seventh, fourth and fifth respectively in three trials before she even had a start. The filly that couldn’t get anything right has became one that does no wrong.
“She was a bit of a funny bugger,” Guy said. “She used to play up and do a lot of things wrong and all of a sudden it clicked and now she is perfect.”
Lefkas Island was the only win Guy and training partner, son Daniel, had on Saturday at the Coast but the duo came close to multiple other victories.
Guy had six runners with Nivo and Fogoso placing second while Premiere Place and Go Better
both finished third. Apple Thief was the only one not to place, finishing 10th.
