Top jockey Michael Cahill is recovering in a Gold Coast hospital after an accident at his home on Sunday night.

Cahill, a dual Group 1 winner during this year’s winter carnival, was put in an induced coma but regained consciousness on Monday afternoon.

His brother Mathew said it was the result of a fall down the stairs at his home.

“He’s been in a moon boot and he slipped on the stairs about 10.30 (Sunday night) and hit the back of his head,” Cahill said.

“He was knocked unconscious when it happened and was placed in an induced coma when he went to hospital. He’s come around and is conscious now.

“The scans have come back clear and doctors have told us there’s no bleeding on the brain. He is in intensive care, but the doctors are happy with him.”

Cahill was in the moon boot as he recovers from a fractured right foot incurred in a barrier accident last month. He rode for 10 days after the incident, before the extent of the injury was revealed.

He has not ridden since October 25 and had been hopeful of making a return to riding on George Moore Stakes Day, November 30.
