HUSSON Eagle will have to bounce back from two “disgraceful” runs that have left his trainer scratching his head to win a second straight Magic Millions Sprint with jockey Michelle Payne.

The five-year-old is a $26 chance in today’s race after finishing 12th and 10th at Rosehill and Eagle Farm in December at his past two starts.

Thumps were found to be the cause of the first disappointing result.

Victorian-based trainer Patrick Payne conceded it was still a mystery as to why Husson Eagle was struggling because he remained in what seemed to be perfect condition.

“His last two starts were pretty much disgraceful,” Payne said.

“He ran terrible in Sydney two starts ago and pulled up with the thumps and we can forgive him for that.

“We have treated him with more electrolytes to try to get that out.

“But he was ordinary again the other day at Eagle Farm.

“Michelle suggested that maybe he couldn’t get traction on that track. We might be clutching at straws a little bit.

“But we can’t find anything wrong with the horse. He is in perfect order so we are keen to give him a try.”

Patrick Payne said common sense had prevailed when Michelle was given a licence to ride in Queensland despite being unable to do so in NSW because she holds a Victorian jockey-trainer permit.

“I think it was a sensible decision to be made,” Payne said.

“I respect NSW for what they did – that’s their rules and they stand by that – so you have to respect that.

“She is a very helpful rider for this horse so we are extremely happy to have her on.”
