GOLD Coast trainer Bryan Guy says Junction is set up to record an upset win in the $250,000 Inglis Classic at Randwick today.
Guy teamed up with Wylie Dalziel Roy Higgins Racing to buy Junction, a son of Real Saga, for $55,000 as a yearling last year. It was the only horse he purchased at the Inglis sales in Sydney.
“We went down and only bought one and we got him there this year straight away so it’s been good,” Guy said.
It has been over a decade since Guy has raced in Sydney where he trained until shifting to the Gold Coast in 2000.
“It would be nice to win back in Sydney,” Guy said.
“I haven’t been down for a very long time and to go back to my home state and win a race at Randwick would be great.”
Guy said the natural improvement in the two-year-old gelding, a Gold Coast winner at his only start, and a start from barrier 12 gave Junction and rider Paul Hammersley every opportunity to win the 1200m race that was postponed for 48 hours due to excessive heat.
“They seem to always get away from the fence down there so with some luck we could in the right going,” Guy said of the barrier draw.
Junction, a $19 chance today, did everything wrong on his way to a debut victory on January 25 after winning a Gold Coast trial a week earlier.
But Guy said Junction, despite still being immature, had improved enough to be competitive in the Inglis Classic.
The gelding is one of only two horses in the field that have won a race. The other is the Canberra-trained Fire Stoker ($8).
“We put a set of winkers on him and worked him in them and he seemed to work quite well in them,” Guy said.
“He was more attractive in them and we are quite happy with him. He did everything wrong when he won that day and still won.”
