A THREE-year-old Gold Coast gelding has already made a name for himself – and that’s before he jumps for the first time tomorrow. You will laugh when you hear his name said fast.

A THREE-year-old Gold Coast gelding has already made a name for himself – and that’s before he jumps for the first time tomorrow.

Wear The Fox Hat will at Murwillumbah add his name to racing’s all-time list of quirky titles, alongside Ivanna Humpalot, Pee Nesenvy and Anita Bath.

The Kelly Doughty-trained galloper has so far had three trials dating back as far as last January, culminating in a fourth out of five over 1000m at the Gold Coast on December 27.

Wear The Fox Hat now steps up to tomorrow’s $20,000 Maiden Handicap (1200m), bringing with him extra attention thanks to the unique moniker.

Connections wouldn’t elaborate fully on the name but Doughty recently revealed her galloper, by Foxwedge and from Elusiv Lady In Red, is more than just a funky title.

“He’s a very nice horse,” she said.

“He was terribly fat when he turned up but he’s now trim.

“I think you will be hearing his name along the way.”

Doughty admitted some “larrikin” owners were behind the name of Wear The Fox Hat, who she predicted to ultimately become a middle distance galloper.

Wear The Fox Hat ($15), to be ridden by Luke Rolls tomorrow, will carry 57.5kg, with Jeff Lloyd aboard raging favourite Wallander ($2.40).
