GOLD Coast jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester believes he has overcome the ‘toughest period of his career’ after finding form and his sixth winner of the season at Aquis Park on Saturday.

WHY EDMONDS COULD HAVE SECOND MILLIONS WINNER

The 21-year-old apprentice has doubled his winner count in the past four days on the Gold Coast riding Calabria (race four) and Missed The Alarm (race two) to victory.

After spending the first few months of the year down in Sydney, has correlated with a reversal in fortune for Guthmann-Chester.

“It’s been the toughest period of my career,” he said.

“I’ve had a lot of luck so far and a few things have come easy and I’ve always seemed to find success.

“At the start of the year, I went to Sydney and spent two months down there at Warwick Farm for a bit of experience and put things on hold here.

“In turn, I gave up some of my relationships here.

“I decided that I didn’t think it was the best move so I was happy to be home.

“I’ve been struggling to get good quality rides again since I’ve been back so my manager and I decided to return to the Gold Coast and it’s shown in the past few weeks.”

FANTASTIC FILLY COULD BE DUNN’S MAGIC MILLIONS STAR

Hard work has paid off for the emerging rider who believes that a stint on the Coast will enhance his prospects of becoming a metro rider next season.

Guthmann-Chester hasn’t ridden a winner in Brisbane so far this season so made the decision to forgo metro opportunities to find form on the Gold Coast.

“The plan is to stay here for the time being,” Guthmann-Chester said.

“In hindsight, it was the best thing for me to do at the moment but it’s not really what I want to be doing.

“You get to half way through the season when you’ve only had a few winners and it gets you down a bit and you lack a bit of confidence.

“To come back and get good support and get results so soon gives me belief I’ve made the right decision.”

While Guthmann-Chester said he learnt a lot from his stint in Sydney,

“I never had a lot of expectations and knew it was going to be a learning curve,” he said.

“You’re riding against the best jockey’s week in week out.”

Guthmann-Chester said he was thrilled to ride Calabria to a win after trialling the horse to a win earlier this year.

“She showed speed in the trial but not in the race so I had no expectations but then she jumped really well and put herself at the front to her credit,” he said.
