GOLD Coast trainer Alicia Willick has finally had a change of luck.
After battling injury, sickness, including a horse pass away due to cancer recently, Willick kicked off the new racing season in style after Toffie Lady stormed home in race two at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Saturday.
It was the first win in four starts for the three year old filly who made her track debut at the Beaudesert in June this year.
“I feel like I hit a bus of Chinaman and I’m building up to a winning the lotto soon,” Willick said of her poor luck.
“I’ve had a bad run of luck lately with injuries and sickness so it’s nice to get a bit of luck.”

After starting strongly, Toffie Lady dropped back into the chasing pack as the race rounded the final bend, resulting in a tight finish though Willick and owners Ron Sharpley and John and Marge Veviers had no doubt she’d beaten out Mysterious Lady on the line.
“We thought she got there because we were standing right near the line,” Willick said.
“She’s such a trier.
“She threw herself over the line.”
After finishing third in her previous three starts and now adding a win to her record, Willick was full of praise for apprentice jockey Minehiko Shimodaira who appears to have an affinity with the emerging filly.
“He rode her through all the way with track work and the owners were good to give him a go but he’s ridden her well and repaid their faith,” she said.
Willick, who is currently training around ten horses, said that Toffie Lady is one of the best to work with.
“She’s got the best temperament,” she said.
“She’s so willing and she’s done such a great job to jump out of her trials and now win.”
