Power 100: Sport’s heaviest hitters

THOSE who hold the power in sport can do so fleetingly. Here are those who currently wield power in the Gold Coast landscape.

Sports Wrap 19.11.18

SPORT is a constantly moving beast.

Everything can change from one game to the next, whether in the context of that fixture, or on a much grander scale.

This rolling landscape means those who hold the power – or held the power – can quickly fall.

The Bulletin’s most influential sporting figures remain at the whim of the sporting season, or the fortunes of their form or that of their club.

It was only earlier this year then Titans supremo Graham Annesley held fifth spot on the list of Gold Coast’s Sport Power 50.

Now, with Annesley leaving to take up an NRL role in Sydney, he no longer holds the power he once did.

Others, like Suns CEO Mark Evans, ranked No.8 in the Power 50, is suddenly a man on the fly.

With Gold Coast’s AFL franchise lurching towards another season of heartache, Evans shapes as the figure who could shift the landscape – should he get things right.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Gilmore had held spot No.7 but with a seventh women’s world surfing title on the cards, she too is now armed with extra power.

Golfer Adam Scott ranked No.10 earlier this year but after a mixed season and his impending rare absence from the Aussie summer, he won’t hold the same spotlight.

Then there are those who held the top two spots.

While the Power 100, which considers a person’s influence across a range of sectors, places Titans co-owner Bec Frizelle above Suns chairman Tony Cochrane, when sport power alone is considered, Cochrane holds more sway by virtue of his extra international ventures.

Those seedings, however, can change quickly in a rapid-fire footy season in which fortunes can come down to an extra win here – or extra loss there.
