Port Adelaide issues media with excessive naming guidelines ahead of 150th anniversary season

We understand AFL clubs wanting media to use correct logos but when did a name become such a big deal? Plus the veteran AFL umpire “new” to the game, Nick Kyrgios’s blow-up and the on-air radio stoush.

We think Port Adelaide may be getting a little bit ahead of themselves.

To celebrate the club's 150th anniversary in 2020 they will have a new commemorative logo on its jumpers.

This was forwarded to all media outlets on Thursday along with a set of guidelines which is where they start to lose us.

Fair enough they want the right logo used wherever possible but the 24-page document seemed a tad excessive.

Hidden inside it was this gem which left us scratching our heads:

“Please note: under no circumstances should the club be referred to as ‘Port’ or ‘PORT POWER’ or ‘THE POWER’ although the club can be referred to as ‘the POWER’.”

Hmmmmmm. OK.

We're not sure of the penalties that will be enforced if you stray outside the guidelines but don't say you haven't been warned.

AFL UMP IN THE FIRING LINE

Matt Stevic is the AFL's best umpire.

This year he officiated in his seventh grand final — he's done the last six — and is also a six-time All-Australian with more than 360 games experience.

So you'd think umpiring an international women's game as part of a European goodwill tour would be a piece of cake.

Think again.

During a game between Great Britain and Ireland, Stevic came under fire from one of the GB players.

She was convinced he'd missed a couple of throwing the ball decisions and couldn't let it go.

It didn't help that the Brits were getting flogged by the Irish who had a couple of AFLW draftees in their side.

After the match the disgruntled Brit approached Stevic's GF partner Brett Rosebury who was getting ready to umpire the next game.

Much to Rosebury's amusement she proceeded to question Stevic's experience, suggesting he was "new" to the whole umpiring caper.

Naturally the incident spread like wildfire through the umpiring ranks and then bobbed up on 3AW's Rumour File segment on Thursday morning.

KYRGIOS CAN’T HELP BITING BACK

Just when Nick Kyrgios makes headlines for good reasons after his recall to the Davis Cup, he once again can't help himself on social media.

The Australian had a run-in with rising Norwegian star Casper Ruud after a heated match at the Rome Masters in May where Kyrgios was defaulted after smashing a racquet, kicking a water bottle and throwing a chair.

Ruud reignited the incident in an interview with a Swedish tennis magazine where he said the Aussie was “an idiot on the court”.

This was too much for our man Nick who fired up on Twitter with the following two responses:

"Hey @CasperRuud98 next time you have something to say, I would appreciate you say it to my face, I’m sure you wouldn’t run your mouth so much after that. Until then I will continue to rather watch paint dry then watch you play tennis, boring af.

"But again, I also understand why you have to keep my name in your mouth, because people don’t even realise that you play tennis ... goodluck in Milan champ x"

THE WHISPER

We hear tensions may have boiled over between two on-air radio hosts regarding the Joe Daniher saga during trade week. It's fair to say there was no whispering involved with the torrent of abuse stunning those who witnessed it.
