Broncos star player Payne Haas has raised eyebrows after he shared a shocking Instagram post written by his uncle.
The post which can be viewed on Haas’s public Instagram story, is a photo of him next to his mother Uiatu Tafua and uncle Mark Tafua surrounded by edited captions saying “Aiga forever,” “FTS” and “FTP,” followed by the words “stay staunch, love you sis”.
The captions have raised eyebrows among the NRL stars 89,000 followers, with the acronyms assumed to represent “f*** the system,” and “f*** the police.”
It comes after Haas’s mother was sentenced to jail on Thursday for punching one security guard and spitting on another at the Gold Coast’s Star Casino in May.
The violent altercation saw Ms Tafua sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, suspended after one month, and she is expected to be released on October 1.
It’s not the first time Ms Tafua or other relatives of Haas have appeared before a court.
Ms Tafua was also convicted of assault occasioning bodily harm in May 2019 after she bashed a deliver driver at a Gold Coast shopping centre, leaving him with several severe facial injuries.
Before that she was handed a three-year probation sentence for assaulting a mother and her teenage daughter at a women’s rugby league match in Brisbane.
Haas himself was recently sentenced to a two-year good behaviour bond after he intimidated police while being under the influence of alcohol at a Gold Coast venue in 2021.
While an NRL rookie, he was also charged with a number of traffic incidents in 2019, including unlicensed driving and using a mobile phone while driving.
The number of off-field incidents involving Haas and his family led to Haas copping a four-game suspension and a $20,000 fine from the Broncos in 2019 for failing to co-operate with an NRL Integrity Unit investigation.
It raised questions over how rugby league clubs should handle off-field incidents and how harsh penalties should be for players who break club culture standards.
The Brisbane Broncos were contacted for comment.
