Logan’s latest sporting star is Freestyle BMX rider Logan Martin who grew up at the Crestmead skate park

Logan City treasure trove of sporting talent knows no bounds, with the latest sporting star a young man from Marsden State High School who grew up spending his weekends at the Crestmead skate park.

Marsden State High School alumni Logan Martin has his brother Nathan and his supportive parents to thank for helping him on his road to becoming an Olympian.

The 26-year-old is poised to represent Australia in freestyle BMX when the Tokyo Olympic Games come around in July, 2021.

“At moment it is me and another guy from Australia (Brandon Loupos) looking likely.

“But we have to qualify Australia in the top spot to take both of us and at the moment we are tied with America.’’

Martin learned his craft after following his brother Nathan to the Crestmead skate park when he was aged 12 or 13 years.

“We moved close to skate park in Crestmead and it was pretty much a daily thing,’’ Martin said.

“When I first started riding I went with my brother and he got me into it. I and grateful for that.

“Every day after school and every weekend we’d be there.

“All my days were around the skate park or travelling on a train to a different skate park.

“My parents (Donna and Sean) were super supportive taking me to the local competitions, buying me bikes and parts and helping me live out a passion.’’

Beenleigh was another skate park he’d visit, and sometimes he’d stay on the Beenleigh train and get off at Nerang on the Gold Coast to visit that skate park.

“It is what I wanted when I was a kid,’’ he said.

“When I started in BMX I watched people riding events in US and to be living my childhood dream is amazing.

“But it did not come without hard work and hours of effort.’’

A typical day will see Martin ride his bike for 3-4 hours at a local skate park, or one that is set-up in his northern Gold Coast hinterland backyard at Maudsland

“It varies each day,’’ Martin said.

Throw in gym work and maintaining a healthy diet and he is a busy boy.

“Then you make sure your body is recovering for the next day,’’ he said.

Martin said the turning point in his career came aged around 15-16 years.

“I could see myself progressing quicker than my other friends,’’ said Martin, who had a major hand in the redesign of the Beenleigh skate park facility.

“And around that time I started hanging out with a bloke who was a professional on the Gold Coast, Kyle Baldock.

“I looked up to where he was, rode with him and made a decision to train and try my luck overseas and go to an event.

“So in 2012 I went to Paris and won the event and that was my first time competing with all the others on an international stage.’’

Again in 2013 Martin was off, and thereafter “I travelled to as many events as I can’’.

“I won again in France and at a few others later in that year.

“It kicked off my career and I started to get a few sponsors.’’

Fast forward to 2020 and Martin finds himself a finger from selection for the Olympic Games, an amazing story for a boy that started off mucking around at the Crestmead skate park with his older brother.
