With almost two decades of racing, chasing and winning under her belt, few athletes have a better eye for a dangerous star on the rise than Courtney Hancock.
The multiple Nutri-Grain series winner, Australian iron champion and Coolangatta Gold titleholder has only been watching from the sidelines for two races as part of the TV commentary team for the Nutri-Grain series but she’s had her head turned by a young gun she rates as “very special’’.
With the likes of Lana Rogers, Georgia Miller and Lucy Derbyshire dominating the opening two rounds of the Nutri-Grain professional series pre Christmas at Manly, Hancock has identified another ironwoman to watch as the events heads to Maroubra on Saturday and Sunday for rounds three and four.
Electra Outram is sitting fourth on the overall standings behind round one winner Rogers and round two victor Miller and the consistent Derbyshire.
And like Hancock, she hails from a NSW coastal country town, in her case Sawtell, but is now based in Queensland where she is coached by former ironman Wes Berg.
“She has a great aura around her, is the biggest sweetheart and a very special athlete,’’ Hancock said.
“She really gave it to the older girls. She races in a beautiful manner and is very respectful but goes for it.
“She’s been in Taplin teams that have won Australian titles and she’s peaking at the right time.
“She’s 22 and really hitting her straps. She’s a big one for the future. I would be expecting to see her in the top three.
“This is Electra’s year. She’s saying I am here to do something special.’’
