Why history sides with Queensland in State of Origin decider

Queensland are rated as outsiders to win the Origin decider at ANZ Stadium, but the statistics show that the Blues have plenty to be worried about.

THE Blues might be short-priced favourites in tonight’s epic State of Origin clash at ANZ Stadium but Queensland are the kings when it comes to a decider.

In Origin’s 40-year history, only 19 series have come down to a Game Three decider – and Queensland have won 13 times.

The Maroons even claimed the shield in two drawn games because they were the reigning champions.

While the Blues are oozing confidence after their 38-6 win in Game Two in Perth, they will also be aware they have not won a series decider in 14 years.

In contrast, the Maroons have won the past seven series that have gone to a third game.

Queensland coach Kevin Walters yesterday rubbished any suggestion his players might carry some mental demons into tonight’s clash in front of 82,500 fans - most of them wearing blue - and reminded NSW of the Maroons’ success south of the border.

“We don’t have any demons,” Walters said.

“I’ve been here and won premierships.

“I’ve been here and won Origins.

“A lot of the players sitting in there have as well. We’ll play the Origin in the desert, it doesn’t matter.

“Coming down here is going to be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to showcase their skills and how good they can be at this level.”

NSW’s woeful record of just four wins in 19 Game Three deciders clearly has Blues coach Brad Fittler on edge.

“You learn to win and you get used to it and you get better at it,” Fittler said last weekend.

“Queensland has had some really good footy teams. They kept winning those games and their footy team got better and better.

“There were seven through that period when they won all those series. That’s a big chunk. I’m gathering there was a lot at the start of Origin as well.”

Ladbrokes have NSW at $1.38 favourites, with Queensland rated $3.15 outsiders.
