YEAR 11-12 BOYS DIV 1: COOMBABAH SHS v ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

A FOUR-TRY, 20-minute first-half spell set up a commanding 36-14 Coombabah SHS win over St Michael’s College in the Titans Schools League on Wednesday night.

Quickfire tries to Tana Clark, Hunter Innes and Te Hata Reid gave Coombabah the early ascendancy, not helped by St Michael’s profligacy in attack.

Twice the boys in red and white put the ball down in an attacking position – the second a dropped ball from the dropout which led to Innes’ breakaway try.

And Innes looked to be over again in short order, only to give away his double to Beau Liddle for the easiest try of his life right next to the posts.

Tensions boiled over approaching halftime and both sides came in for a scuffle but it was, once again, Coombabah with the last laugh as Dwayne Ckwan-Fuimaono was schemed open on the left edge to catch and score untouched on the stroke of halftime.

Needing a near-miracle down 26-0 at the break, St Michael’s finally found first points when halfback Jack Kelly broke out of a tackle on the 20m line and raced away to score under the posts.

The speedy playmaker was over again on the very next attacking set, this time breaking through from beyond halfway and beating out the fullback to the right corner in a thrilling race to the line.

The St Michael’s crowd dared to dream the comeback was on – but those dreams were dashed soon after when Coombabah’s unnamed number 19 ran off the dummy half’s hip and crashed under the posts to push the lead back out beyond 20 points.

Refusing to lay down, St Michael’s responded with its third try of the evening on a try-line scramble of bodies but, once again, Coombabah had the immediate reply, this time through winger Jake Smith.

A knock-on at the kick-off gave St Michael’s a chance at a late consolation try.

On the final play of the game, St Michael’s attack the short side from the scrum and a scuffle in back play leads to an all-in as the siren sounds to end the game.

COOMBABAH 36 (Q. Eteru, H. Innes, T. Reid, B. Liddle, D. Ckwan-Fuimaono, Tana Clark, J. Smith tries; M. Logopati 4/7 goals) v ST MICHAEL’S 14 (J. Kelly 2, J. Pilcher tries; O. Eldridge 1/3 goals)

YEAR 9-10 BOYS DIV 1: COOMBABAH SHS v ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

A CLINICAL Coombabah SHS has answered every question thrown at it by St Michael’s en-route to a commanding 28-12 Titans Schools League victory at Nerang on Wednesday night.

Coombabah nabbed first points and was never headed by St Michael’s; answering try for try seemingly at will in the first half before running away with it in the second.

Taj Schofield opened proceedings for Coombabah with a classic winger’s try; schemed into an outnumber on the right edge and an easy as you like catch and score in the corner.

Coombabah’s second minutes later was not as black and white – fullback Reilly Piezas scything through the middle of the field opening the door for hooker Jack Rasmussen to show and go from dummy half under the posts two plays later.

Not to be outdone, St Michael’s hooker Jackson Airey put the exact same maneuver into practice to bring up his side’s first points of the match and they looked back in the contest.

With defence apparently optional to both sides, it wasn’t long before Coombabah was back over the line – this time through the number two Ken Tiomai, with some sneaky footwork at the line to dive between legs and score.

Approaching halftime, St Michael’s let slip a guilt edged opportunity to peg back the lead when a look-away pass to the winger down the right was put down with no defender in sight.

Conversely everything Coombabah touched turned to gold.

A kick across field from Rasmussen landed in the arms of centre Ryan Matthews and somehow, four missed tackles later he was over under the posts and Coombabah had a 24-6 lead heading into halftime.

St Michael’s needed a fast start to the second half to have any chance and they found it through towering lock-forward Teddy Foster, who willed himself through a sea of defenders to score in the left corner minutes into the second stanza.

But as they had all evening previous, Coombabah had an immediate reply.

Five-eighth Cooper McCallum sent a beautiful cut-out pass to his winger in Schofield for another catch-and-score try in the corner.

As time expired, St Michael’s went close to a late consolation try though were held up at the goal line – and Coombabah fullback Piezas was inches from breaking out a length of the field try from dummy half only to be dragged into touch at midfield.

COOMBABAH 28 (T. Schofield 2, J. Rasmussen, K. Tiomai, R. Matthews tries; C. McCallum 4/5 goals) v ST MICHAEL’S 12 (J. Airey, T. Foster tries; ??? 2/2 goals)

YEAR 11-12 DIV 2 BOYS: MIAMI SHS v MEN OF BUSINESS

A HAT-TRICK to bustling centre Jackson Turner has propelled Men of Business to a come-from-behind 32-10 win over Miami SHS at Nerang on Wednesday night.

Turner opened with a first-half double and completed his hat-trick early in the second stanza, as Men of Business piled on xx unanswered points to shock Miami.

It was a sloppy start to the match from both sides, with neither able to complete their sets in the opening exchanges.

But it was Miami who looked the more likely early – and the blue and yellow were first to break the deadlock when second-rower Jaiden Miller crashed through two defenders to find the line.

That seemed to wake Men of Business up, however, and an impressive solo kick chase from winger Marshall Morgan was the catalyst for their first points shortly after, through bustling centre Jackson Turner.

With the game suddenly played at a fever pace, Miami winger Fletcher Phillips took it upon himself to restore his side’s lead with a great run down the right edge to score in the corner.

It lasted just one set later though, as Turner again willed himself through the Miami defensive line to score an early double and restore parity at 10-all.

Not content with heading into halftime all square, Men of Business crashed over again a minute before the siren – through five-eighth Memphis Pakinga - and Charlie Broome duly converted from the sideline to give them a 16-10 lead at the change of ends.

Miami received to start the second half but immediately gave the ball back with a sloppy pass to ground early in the tackle count.

With their tails up, Men of Business wasted no time taking advantage – this time through Mickey Tihema who was put into a gaping hole in the defence Pakinga.

Pakinga was involved again in the next set, this time kicking behind the line for Turner to race through and dive on for his hat-trick.

Miami looked destined to peg one back late in the second half after a great shifting play to the wing – but the final offload went through hands and it was all she wrote for the one-time leaders.

They went to the line again moments later for the same result – a knock-on with points in reach.

Men of Business lost their bench back-rower to the sin bin for a shoulder charge late in the match but it didn’t dampen their impressive 22-point win.

MIAMI 10 (J. Miller, F. Phillips tries; W. Duncan 1/2 goals) v MEN OF BUSINESS 32 (J. Turner 3, M. Pakinga, M. Tihema, ??? tries; C. Broome 3/5 goals)

YEAR 11-12 DIV 1 GIRLS: Marsden SHS v Ipswich SHS

Premiership favorites Marsden SHS revved its engines ahead of the finals with a 34-4 win over Ipswich SHS in year 11-12 action.

On a beautiful autumn evening in Logan, Marsden raced in four first half tries and three in the second half  after the mobile Marsden SHS forwards had ramped up the speed of the match.

At left centre Rialey Baty was a constant threat in attack for Marsden, with her lovely balanced running style carrying her to a try just as the halftime siren was about to sound, and then again 11 minutes from fulltime after her twin sister Mackenzie had run a decoy.

Kiana Tihore-Te Tauri  also blew out the cobwebs with a thrilling burst of speed early in the second half that took her to a 60m try.

It was a good hit out for Marsden against willing opponents who tried to challenge their rivals through the forwards.

The Ipswich SHS were a bigger side and played a power game against their rivals, but Marsden's pack stood up and so did halfback Sienna Lofipo whose defence was outstanding.

The powerful Lofipo also scored Marsden's first try and proved the perfect link between her forwards and backs.

Patricia Wani also deservedly scored after an influential opening effort, while Tihore-Te Tauri also scored the first of two tries n the first half.

Ipswich kept coming and deservedly Angel Smlu crossed because her side did not deserve to be beaten to nil.

Marsden SHS v Ipswich SHS

Year 9-10

Replay: 2021 Titans schools League Girls Div 1 - Yr 9/10 Marsden vs Ipswich

Ipswich SHS and Marsden SHS unfurled a mini schoolgirls classic before the home side snared an upset 20-8 victory in Marsden this afternoon.

A glorious wide pass by Marsden fullback Mercedez Taulelei-siala to her winger Manaia-Rose Afuie two minutes from fulltime wrapped up the game for Marsden.

After enjoying a shock 10-4 advantage at halftime, Marsden were forced to counter punch against a revitalised Ipswich SHS who came at their rivals hard in the second half.

A crucial try to dummy half Chloe Rowe after a power packed charge from Symian Tato raised Marsden to 16-8 just 11 minutes from fulltime.

But even then Marsden were not safe as the Ipswich forwards raised their effort again.

With subtle guidance from five-eight India Seeto, Marsden produced arguably its best play of the season.

And they had to play well to defeat an Ipswich side which had threats from fullback Tiresa Elika right through to its front rower Sky Faimalie.

In the first half Marsden centre Centre Layla Amaru rewarded her hard working forward for providing her with a platform by scoring first, sliding over in the right hand corner.

The enterprising Seeto scored next and Ipswich were unexpectedly trailing 10-nil.

Spurred into action, Ipswich SHS mounted a recovery and it was a relief to the squad to see Lishaninah Ulugia power over, reducing the scoreline to 10-4.

Ipswich, displaying more urgency by playing the ball quicker and running hard from dummy half, tried to wrestle the momentum back from Marsden in the second half.

First half try scorer Ulugia was more than just a power runner, showing great mobility and ball skills as well for Ipswich.

Ipswich centre Ariana Henderson also showed she meant business in defence, shutting down a runaway Marsden No.1 Mercedez Taulelei-siala, while also hustling in all areas of the game.

Ipswich fullback Tiresa Elika then struck with a close range effort to score, and we were set for a thrilling finish as Ipswich closed the gap to 10-8.

Elika then produced a try saving tackle on runaway Marsden winger Rose Afuie, while centre Henderson again reeled in Marsden with telling cover defence.

Marsden had their own defensive heroes, with Karen Pritchard preventing Henderson from what seemed a certain try four minutes from time. That ended up being Ipswich's last throw of the dice.

YEAR 7-8

MARSDEN SHS  v IPSWICH SHS

An exhilarating first half performance from Marsden SHS five-eighth Lilli Lewis thrilled onlookers as the home side accounted for a physical Ipswich SHS.

EVERY TITANS SCHOOLS LEAGUE GAME BROUGHT TO YOU BY PEST BUILD LEGALS.

Marsden won 38-nil, after laying the foundations with a three-try first-half performance, before a fourth try just after halftime to Leilani Taofinuu opened up a 20-nil lead. It was Taofinuu's second try.

Lewis, the son of former schoolboy superstar Aaron Lewis, was Special with a capital S as she darted and weaved her magic.

What a player she is, and how spoiled Marsden's Year 7-8 side are two have two brilliant talents in Lewis and fullback Janique Mili who was having a rest today.

Lewis was amazing. One try, when she shaped to kick, stepped left, then right and then grubber kicked for herself was like watching a young female Allan Langer.

Marsden SHS prop Dhanievah Lepua also had a powerhouse match, with her footwork a highlight around the ruck.

Ipswich also provided two match highlights when Lilly Shaw saved a certain try, and when centre Pauline Moliga chased and tackled Taofinuu as she approached the tryline.

Moliga also ran the ball strongly with limited chances.

The scoreline did not reflect the effort or skill or Ipswich SHS. It is just that the opposition were better.

The Year 12 student with a background in both rugby and Aussie rules has set the tone at training since October last year, three days a week, preparing for Marymount’s Titans Schools League title tilt and subsequent Confraternity Shield campaign.

EARLIER:

LILY Prendergast’s sporting pedigree means the Marymount College rake is tailor-made for her role as an on-field playmaker and leader.

Prendergast, 17, started her school sporting journey in Year 10, joining Marymount’s rugby and rugby league teams and immediately embracing the physicality of the two codes.

“I had a few experiences with AFL when I was younger and I loved the contact of it the whole way through,” she said. “I don’t play AFL any more though, I gave it up to keep playing rugby.”

Aussie rules’ loss has been rugby league’s gain.

Prendergast’s strong defensive mindset and kicking game have made her a valuable No.9 for Marymount.

“My kicking is all right, though I’m probably more defensive. I played as a fullback when I played AFL,” she said.

Following a school sporting year hit hard by cancellations due to Covid-19, Prendergast and her team have a festival of footy to enjoy in the coming months – now with the Titans Schools League and soon the long-awaited return of the Confraternity Shield.

“We were devastated we didn’t get a go last year but I think that’s made everyone more eager this year,” she said.

Marymount played Gold Coast rivals Keebra Park in Monday’s Titans Schools League catch-up round.
