TWEED coach Ben Woolf predicts his side will rise even higher in 2020 thanks to the club’s recommitment to their feeder system with the Gold Coast Titans.
The NRL club and affiliates Burleigh and the Seagulls yesterday locked in a new partnership that will ensure the strong pathways set up between the clubs will extend until at the least the end of 2022.
YES OR NO? TITANS’ STANCE ON FOLAU
The current deal allows the Bears and Tweed to pick up Titans not selected for NRL duty and roll them out in the Intrust Super Cup.
Woolf says further strengthening of that two-way partnership could help Tweed soar even higher after their mighty climb from the doldrums to shock finalists last season.
“It’s definitely positive and there are strong links between the clubs,” Woolf said of yesterday’s deal.
REVEALED: BURLEIGH’S TITANIC START TO 2020
“There's a benefit for both clubs with players coming back and the Titans helping us as well.
“It’s a real positive and after spending a week (at the Titans) I can take that information back to our club.” The agreement ensures that a major component of the Titans’ NRL development pathway remains intact, with the best juniors produced in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region able to reach the game’s elite level without ever leaving their own community.
“The renewal of the affiliation agreement with the Bears and Seagulls is fundamental to the future success of the Titans, and for rugby league on the Gold Coast,” Titans chief executive Steve Mitchell said. “The outstanding work both clubs do around player development, football education and inclusiveness with their fantastic women’s rugby league programs provide a tremendous foundation for the Titans to build on to become an NRL powerhouse.
“In return the Titans offer that pathway and opportunity for players, coaches and officials who excel in their roles to graduate to the NRL where they can meet their full potential.
“I make special mention of the coaches and administrators there as well as players. While we often see players move back and forth between ISC and NRL, it is important to remember that the Titans exist to offer elite-level opportunities to everyone in rugby league in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region.”
