Numbers don’t lie, and the numbers are mounting a strong defence against suggestions that father time has finally caught up to supercoach Wayne Bennett.
Revelations that superstar Latrell Mitchell is likely to miss the rest of the season is just the latest blow in a season that has been cruelled by injuries.
Could Rabbitohs fans have expected anything more with Mitchell, skipper Cameron Murray and chief playmaker Cody Walker all missing most of their campaign?
No other club has more of an excuse than the Bunnies.
Critics, however, can point to the jobs done by the fierce rivals, the Sydney Roosters, or at Bennett’s most recent stop, the Dolphins.
Trent Robinson (Roosters) and Kristian Woolf (Dolphins) are making serious claims for coach of the year honours with the amount of games missed by stars or starting calibre players.
Yet both clubs continue to punch away and are well in the fight for a finals spot.
Whether it’s injuries, suspension, or the gruelling State of Origin period where clubs are forced to miss, or rest, their stars, excuses have been easy to find for some teams.
Not for Robinson.
“It was the start of the Origin period - we had a good run into it. We were building some momentum and then we lost five guys to Origin,” he said this week.
“People expected us not to perform as well during that period and I was really proud of the way they stepped up and performed.
“We’ve had a lot of belief in how we think we can play.”
On the flip side, Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has enjoyed the benefits of good health for most of his main men for most of the year.
But he don’t have much success to show for it.
Ladder leaders Canberra and the Warriors have also been fortunate to keep their key stars on the field as they charge towards a top-four finish.
