THE next Titans coach must find a way to unlock Ash Taylor’s game after the club admitted Garth Brennan’s demise was in part because of his failure to get the best from the million-dollar halfback.
The 2016 NRL rookie of the year was earmarked by many to be the future of the struggling club, especially after Brennan reunited with Taylor at the Titans after mentoring the youngster while coaching in the lower grades at Penrith.
Instead, the 24-year-old has struggled for consistency at the Titans and after a poor start to the 2019 NRL season, was granted indefinite leave from the club due to personal reasons.
‘OUTSTANDING’ NAMES IN RUNNING FOR TITANS JOB
When asked why Brennan couldn’t get the best out of star pupil, Titans executive chairman Dennis Watt struggled to pinpoint a specific reason.
“I can’t answer that,” he said.
“That was certainly the case, that he had a good rapport with Ash.
“We’ve provided him with all the support that he needs and hopefully we’ll see him back on the field living up to his extraordinary talent.”
Taylor isn’t the only player Brennan has struggled to inspire, with Watt revealing that Titans head of performance and culture Mal Meninga had a strong ‘heart to heart’ with the playing group on Monday morning about their recent performances.
INSIDE BRENNAN’S TITANS DOWNFALL
“I know the players had a real honesty session with Mal today about where they are and they don’t want to stay where they are,” he said.
“The squad is better than where it sits on the ladder currently.”
