THE Gold Coast Titans have scored a major mid-season recruitment coup with Warriors wrecking ball Konrad Hurrell to join the club immediately.
The Titans have secured Hurrell until at least the end of 2017 and he will be available to play when they face the Rabbitohs in Perth after this weekend’s bye.
As a condition of the release, Hurrell will not play against the Warriors when the Titans travel to Auckland in Round 17.
The signing of Hurrell comes less than a fortnight after the Gold Coast’s acquisition of Parramatta hooker Nathan Peats, who was forced out of the Eels due to salary cap dramas.
The Titans have won their past two matches following a five-game losing streak and are sitting just outside the top eight, a long way from the wooden spoon they were tipped to claim this season.
Hurrell fell out of favour with Warriors coach Andrew McFadden and if Titans mentor Neil Henry can get the best out of the Tongan international he could be a huge asset for the rebuilding Gold Coast.
“I am really excited to join the Gold Coast Titans,” Hurrell said in an email to Titans members.
“I like how they have been playing this season and I know a few of the boys in the team so it should be a fairly easy transition for me.
“I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the team next week and all the fans at the next home game.
“This is a new challenge for me which I am excited about. I want to show Titans fans and all of the NRL what I am capable of and can’t wait to get that opportunity.”
Hurrell is likely to be rushed into the Gold Coast’s team, where he will slot into the centres.
“It’s great news for this club. In Konrad’s 71 NRL games he has scored 41 tries which alone shows what a dynamic attacking player he is,” Henry said.
“He will add depth to our outside backs which has suffered with the long-term injuries to David Mead and John Olive.
“At 24 he has his best football ahead of him and I look forward to him developing further on the Gold Coast."
