Don't miss out on the headlines from Titans. Followed categories will be added to My News.
HE has come a long way from his days as a nipper at Yamba on the NSW north coast but not a lot about Luke Douglas has changed.
The Gold Coast prop will notch another career achievement when he becomes the 14th Titans player to register 100 NRL games for the club against Canterbury on Saturday.
It will be his 246th NRL match in a career which started with six seasons at Cronulla and includes the record for the most consecutive games played (215).
Douglas is a favourite among his teammates because they know what they’re going to get from him every week.
And it’s always been like that according to childhood friend and Titans teammate Anthony Don.
“He’s always been the same, a really top bloke who everyone liked around Yamba,” Don said.
“Everyone likes him around the Gold Coast.
“He doesn’t like the limelight. He’d rather spend time in the community helping others.”
Douglas won the Ken Stephen Medal at last year’s Dally M Awards because of the work he does in the community.
He pledged to continue the work of late mother Trish with the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland and regularly helps with disabled surfing days.
Douglas and pregnant wife Adele had three choir singers from Uganda stay with them last week.
He took the girls to Cbus Super Stadium last Saturday to give them their first experience of rugby league.
So it comes as no surprise when Douglas describes the most special game of his career.
“Unfortunately I haven’t played finals here so the highlight would have to be my 200th NRL game,” he said.
“We ran out with the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland (players held the hands of children).
“It was Kevin Gordon’s 100th game against the Broncos here and we got the win.
“That was a special moment for me.”
Douglas has put everything into his NRL career.
He is known to be one of the hardest and most dedicated trainers, setting standards for his teammates to follow.
And he believes they are capable of snapping a three-game losing streak against the Bulldogs to get their season back on track.
“We’ve got to stay in touch,” he said.
“We go into every season thinking we’re a chance of getting into the finals.
“People might have doubted us but we have the talent and belief. It’s about getting back in the winner’s circle.
“We’ve lost a few now. It’s a really important game to turn things around.”
The Titans have plenty of reasons to win this game, including to help Douglas celebrate a milestone.
But that’s not what he would want it to be about.
