MEET salt and pepper — the odd couple the Gold Coast Titans are hoping will provide plenty of spice in 2017.
While Jarryd Hayne will be the star attraction the NRL season-opener against the Roosters at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday, Konrad Hurrell and Dan Sarginson are excited to showcase their new partnership.
The Titans’ centres have been inseparable throughout the pre-season. Having both carried knee injuries, Kiwi cult hero Hurrell and English import Sarginson have spent two months by each other’s sides. Sarginson, 23, is a frequent victim of Hurrell’s social media pranks.
“I’m always thereabouts when he’s filming,” Sarginson said.
“It seems like he’s picking on me but I get my own back, don’t worry.
“We had the chance to rehab together every day. We have become pretty close. He has branded us ‘salt and pepper’.
“He’s a good bloke to be around. There is never a dull moment.
“You wouldn’t think it but he trains harder than probably anyone in the team. You think he just jokes about but he means business.”
Hurrell, 25, has resurrected his career on the Gold Coast after falling out of favour with ex-Warriors coach Andrew McFadden.
His mid-season move to the Titans last year coincided with a purple patch of form and the Tongan Torpedo said he was loving life on the Gold Coast.
“If I don’t like the boys, I won’t play good,” Hurrell said.
“You have to feel like you’re brothers with these guys. That’s how I feel at the moment.
“They’ve helped me a lot on and off the field. They’ve been looking after me … we look after each other.
“They’ve been a big part of why I am liking it here.
“I’m good with anyone. I’m just a free spirit kind of guy who can get along with anyone.”
While Hurrell has been cleared to face the Roosters, Wigan recruit Sarginson must get through Tuesday’s training session to earn his NRL debut.
“I’ve trained the last couple of weeks and it’s feeling pretty good,” Sarginson said. “It was precautionary to keep me out for six weeks. I could have ruptured the patella tendon and been out for the season before it even started.
“I’m a bit nervous, which is good. I play my best when I’m nervous.’’
