NRL SuperCoach: Chris Honnery’s team revealed

He’s a rookie in The Courier-Mail sport team, but is Chris Honnery a rookie at NRL SuperCoach? Check out his team before you sign up for the 2019 season.

Anthony Minichiello names his top SuperCoach prospects at the Roosters in 2019

I’ve been avoiding having to reveal my team for the simple fact that it changes every second day.

Whether it be suspensions, poor form or just cold feet, I hadn’t been able to settle on my squad of 25.

Even at the time of writing this, I was thinking about swapping around my team.

But due to the public demand for my team reveal, I’ve decided it’s probably time to shine a light on which players are being counted on to lead me to glory.

So please, let me introduce you to the Hon’s Heroes of 2019.

Andrew McCullough’s ownership is reasonably low this season.
Andrew McCullough’s ownership is reasonably low this season.

HOK

Andrew McCullough ($505,300, Brisbane Broncos)

Each year I overlook McCullough in my side for the irreplaceable guns in Cameron Smith and Damien Cook. But I’m willing to take a punt on the starting Brisbane hooker this year because a) he starts at a reasonable price and b) he’s owned by just 6% of SuperCoaches.

FRF

Tevita Pangai Jr ($495,000, Brisbane Broncos)

A human wrecking ball that averaged 52.9 last year at 1.1 points per minute. Is likely to see more minutes this year which can only mean more points.

Josh Papalii ($595,900, Canberra Raiders)

Picked in just 8% of SuperCoach teams, with a 60+ average in the past three seasons, I find it very hard to go passed this big bopper.

2RF

Jason Taumalolo ($657,400, North Queensland Cowboys)

Averaged 70.3, 75.3 and 64.8 in the past three seasons and doesn’t look like he’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

Matt Gillett ($432,900, Brisbane Broncos)

I’m going out on a limb with Gillett in the hope he returns to his devastating 2017 best. Suffered a neck injury last year but averaged 65.8 in 2017.

Victor Radley ($400,700, Sydney Roosters)

Decent mid-ranger with plenty of potential to make some cash. More of a money-maker for me.

HFB

Michael Morgan ($409,200, North Queensland Cowboys)

Normally I save the HFB position each year for the GOAT Johnathan Thurston, so I only think it’s fitting that it should go to his successor. The Cowboys will be Morgo’s team to lead this year so expect him to step it up a notch.

5/8

Anthony Milford ($511,900, Brisbane Broncos)

I rode the rollercoaster last year and quite enjoyed the ride. Scores of 100 and 106 last year under “SuperCoach killer” Wayne Bennett are proof of his freakish talent. New coach Anthony Seibold will hopefully show him how to be more consistent.

CTW

Jarrod Croker ($509,700, Canberra Raiders)

A Hon’s Hero stalwart. Reliable, reasonably well priced and a 54.8 average last year. Set and forget.

Jesse Ramien ($492,800, Newcastle Knights)

Showed glimpses of talent for Cronulla last year so I’m hoping he steps it up even more for his new club. This will of course depend on whether he’ll play the full 80 each week for the Knights.

Tyrone Peachey ($453,000, Gold Coast Titans)

One of the players I brought in recently after watching the All Stars match last week. Looked dangerous every time he touched the ball.

Jordan Kahu ($278,700, North Queensland Cowboys)

I’ve pulled the trigger on bringing Kahu into the squad now that he’s at the Cowboys. He’s almost a sure thing for the starting fullback spot plus he’s a handy goal kicker, so at his price, I think it’s worth taking the gamble.

Kalyn Ponga will be an absolute gun this season. Mark my words. Picture: Phil Hillyard

FLB

Kalyn Ponga ($614,300, Newcastle Knights)

Everyone seems to be put off young Ponga after his rather quiet night for the Maori All Stars but guys, that was ONE game. Yes there will be some teething problems as he adapts to his new position but it’ll be worth it come season’s end.

INTERCHANGE

Jordan McLean (FRF, $474,400, North Queensland Cowboys)

I was hoping to keep this selection under-wraps because I think McLean will be a must-have this year. He played just 10 games last year after suffering a foot injury, but fired up at the back-end of last season, scoring 59, 88, 67 and 55 in the last four rounds.

Tom Trbojevic (FLB, $691, 200, Manly Sea Eagles)

One of the best in the business and only sits on my bench because of Ponga.

Kurt Mann is pencilled in for now. Picture: Darren Pateman

Kurt Mann (HOK/ CTW, $258,900, Newcastle Knights)

One of those players who have been pencilled in for now. Mann’s selection as a Hon’s Hero will depend on where he will be named in the Newcastle squad.

Jack Bird (CTW/ 5/8, $320,900, Brisbane Broncos)

Another pencilling in. Will be watched closely during the Broncos trial match this weekend.
