KFC SuperCoach NRL Cheapie Bible: Round 15 bargain buys

Round 14 was brutal for many KFC SuperCoaches, but there was one standout rookie! Trent Copeland runs through all the cheapies for Round 15.

KFC SuperCoach NRL: Round 14 Play of the Week

Well I don’t know about you, but Round 14 round was just brutal!

Late-outs, resting of Origin players, and injuries galore. Thankfully there are a few cheapie doing the business for KFC SuperCoaches to keep our teams afloat - namely Bailey Simonsson in with a big 100 in a week of the greatest significance, and MARZHEW mania delivering again.

Big thanks to the Broncos for their accommodation of our high-scoring needs… I digress.

By definition a ‘Cheapie’ will be referenced when under $300,000 and actually relevant for KFC SuperCoach purposes. Key word being relevant. Once players eclipse the $300k mark they will be given a final verdict in the ‘Bon Voyage’ section.

Buckle up, here we go!

Greg Marzhew CTW (Titans) $173,700 - 64 points

Some noses were out of joint when I called Marzhew ‘Brian To’o lite’ last week, including some massive raps and the potential for him to be a keeper in the CTW should the Titans see him as a permanent option on the wing. Well, I give you 64 points with no real attacking stats against the Roosters. The bulk of the points came from a MASSIVE 16 points in tackle busts (28 total in just two games!), a further two offloads, and a huge work rate with yet another 35 points in runs. Quite simply, the question isn’t whether he’s any good, because I think you get it after listening to us bang on about him for years, it’s purely if he can hold off Anthony Don (named on extended bench) and more importantly perhaps, Corey Thompson (yes, remember him?) who is set to return next week. Killer blow that the Titans play the last game of the round as I fear despite being named to start, Marzhew may find himself out of the side in a late switch. Watch late mail like a hawk if you’re trading in this week and leave it as late as possible. Pleeeease Mr. Holbrook.

VERDICT: BUY*. *IF he keeps this spot, as he’s a Brian To’o-lite potential keeper for the run home he’s that good.

He’s not a locked in starter at the Roosters, but Joseph Suaalii is still one of the best cheapie options. Picture: Getty Images.

Joseph Suaalii CTW | FLB (Roosters) $227,100 - 32 points

With Tedesco being a late-out for the Roosters, Suaalii played his third game and jumped $53,400 in the process. Despite passing the eyeball test with flying colours Suaalii only managed the 32 points as all the ball skipped past him to Ikuvalu to cross the line. Nevertheless, a price rise and the prospect of further money to come this week with a mooted rest on the cards for Sam Walker (with Manu to the halves, Suaalii to centre). Given the matchup against the Panthers he’s a definite SIT outside your 17 this week, but still a good purchase with the bye coverage.

VERDICT: BUY.

Aaron Schoupp CTW (Bulldogs) $214,100 - 30 points

Don’t look now, but the Bulldogs are actually scoring points and winning games! Unfortunately for KFC SuperCoaches interested in Aaron Schoupp’s prospects, he avoided the attacking stats this time around, scoring 30 points to see a $40,000 initial price rise. With a -1- BE still in his possession and coverage of the round 17 bye week, Schoupp is certainly still in the frame for selection - if you dare jump on a Bulldogs’ attacking player.

VERDICT: POD-BUY. Not for me, as Corey Allan will return shortly from his shoulder injury which could shuffle the backline around.

Dominic Young CTW (Knights) $173,700 - 52 points

Young is an athletic freak, over six feet tall, and great footwork at the line with a nose for the try line. By the way the injury list and team selection appears at the Knights, Young has the wing spot over Brayden Musgrove on merit, and with Bradman Best out until round 24 with ankle surgery it really is only Edrick Lee (foot, indefinite) who will displace the young winger. It’s a real shame Young didn’t start the season in the Knights line-up as I think he could end up making a nice amount of money, but given the bye in round 17 and big Edrick could be back any minute, the timing just isn’t right.

VERDICT: POD-BUY. Not for me.

KFC SuperCoach NRL: Round 15 Buy Hold Sell

Matt Timoko CTW (Raiders) $203,100 - 83 points

DON’T DO IT. Yet anyway. Did you hear me when we warned against Keenan Palasia? Or Zac Cini? The debut high score, big negative BE and green dot next to a near base price player seems to lure people in… But despite the great score last week, the Raiders are not the Raiders of the past two years with regards to opportunities for attacking stats. With Curtis Scott stood down, Jarrod Croker listed ‘indefinite’ and Bailey Simonsson now locked in at fullback with CNK out for the season - Timoko’s prospects do look good. The other thing that looks good are the 27 tackles, 12 points in tackle busts and 19 points in runs forming a really nice ‘base’ to his scoring.

VERDICT: WATCHLIST. One of the most purchased players this week, but Timoko is the perfect downgrade during Super Trade Week in my opinion.

TC Robati 2RF (Broncos) $223,500 - 18 points

It’s a shock, I know, but Robati did NOT score two tries in limited minutes off the bench this week. He scored 18 points in 26 minutes with a somewhat healthy roster in front of him - it was never going to be the 50+ minutes many were hoping for. Still, I guess the positive for those that did jump on is the $50,000 initial price rise and BE still at -24 coming into a matchup against the Rabbitohs. Undoubtedly talented and hits the line with serious force, but he’s an immediate sell in ‘Super Trade Week’ next week.

VERDICT: AVOID. Yep, no coverage of round 17 along with the game time concerns and I’m out.

Joey Lussick HOK (Eels) $264,400 - 81 points

A pretty nice game for Lussick in Reed Mahoney’s absence, playing the full 80 minutes, scoring a try and making 46 tackles against the Tigers. I’ll keep this short, however, as Reed Mahoney has avoided surgery and is listed as a round 18 return meaning Lussick will either be back to his bench utility role or out of the 17 altogether in a matter of weeks.

VERDICT: AVOID.

Javid Bowen CTW (Cowboys) $278,800 - 65 points

There we go! Bowen crossed the try line for the first time in three games and also picked his work rate back up to 20 points in runs. When Bowen is taking the line on, he scores well for KFC SuperCoach. That try and 65 point tally will kick his price rise cycle past round 17 coverage which is great news for owners, with match-ups against the Sharks and struggling Knights to come the next two weeks.

VERDICT: HOLD. Bowen could end up topping $350k and provide hugely important points in the bye round coming up.

KFC SuperCoach NRL: Round 15 Winners & Losers

Brodie Jones 2RF (Knights) $287,600 - 47 points

Another 70 minutes, another 47 points and $30,000 price rise for Jones owners in yet another thumping for the Knights. Man, how they have fallen off since the early rounds. Since pepping-up Jones as a round 13 smoky purchase, he’s delivered scores of 51, 41 and 47 points and still possesses a BE of just 19 heading into a matchup against the Warriors this weekend. Owners should plan for a sell either next week with the 5 trades available at a tick over $300k, or milk the last ounce of cash against the Cowboys in round 16 then sell to a gun like Taumalolo (or similar) for round 17 onwards.

VERDICT: HOLD. Was a POD purchase, and if you jumped on, sit tight and trade to a gun with round 17 coverage.

Jayden Campbell FLB (Titans) $173,700 & Selwyn Cobbo FLB (Broncos) $173,700

Two incredibly talented kids in the NRL already showing what they’re capable of, having averaged 48PPG and 46PPG respectively and both set to jump in price a big amount this weekend. But, much like Reece Walsh a few months ago, the FLB-only eligibility is the killer here… I simply cannot advocate EVER running without two guns at fullback at all times, no matter the talent. Hopefully next year we can jump on a few of these young guns if they’re not completely overpriced!

VERDICT: AVOID.

BON VOYAGE

Bailey Simonsson CTW (Raiders) $346,500 - 116 points

Wowzaaaaa. Turns out Simonsson has some serious chops as a fullback, with a little thank you note to the Broncos for being such an accommodating host for his debut game there. 116 points comprising two try assists, a try contribution, 14 points in tackle busts, a massive THREE line break assists and 36 points in runs. That’s nice, Jerry, I mean Bailey. Given the combination of match-ups against the Dragons, Titans and understrength Sea Eagles up to round 17 coverage and a KFC SuperCoach PLUS projected price rise of $120,000 the next two weeks you could absolutely look at a trade of Bradman Best to Simonsson this week!

VERDICT: HOLD. Sell at around $500k in round 18, what a dream result!
