Billy Slater’s Maroons are down on troops and really didn’t need the news of Ben Hunt’s injury following the Broncos’ loss to South Sydney.
Hunt has been a solid interchange player for his state for years, and playmaking stocks are thinning out by the minute.
Harry Grant is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury this week, which would make him an immediate lock for the hooker position.
Daly Cherry-Evans and Cameron Munster will likely round out the halves, with Cowboys halfback Tom Dearden firming as the new bench rover.
Slater is also sweating on the fitness of Reece Walsh and the form of Kalyn Ponga, who has had a topsy-turvy few weeks.
He’s also lost Max Plath, Thomas Flegler, while Lindsay Collins is borderline as he attempts to return from a knee injury.

South of the Queensland-NSW border, Ryan Papenhuyzen’s performance against the Wests Tigers rockets him into contention for the fullback spot alongside James Tedesco and incumbent Dylan Edwards.
Mitch Moses’ return from injury for the Eels has thrown a spanner in the works for Laurie Daley in the halves, but it’s a good problem to have.
Brian To’o and Zac Lomax are still battling to get back onto the field, but Tom Trbojevic is available and several wingers across the board have been in good form.
Would you pick Jake Trbojevic for NSW? Have your say!
