South Sydney have suffered another devastating injury setback after it emerged that prop Davvy Moale would miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury.
This masthead understands that Moale underwent surgery this week on his wrist, having suffered the injury against Manly several weeks ago.
Moale’s injury is the latest blow to the Rabbitohs in the wake of revelations that five-eighth Cody Walker was expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season with a calf injury.
It is understood Campbell Graham is also dealing with a back problem and may not play against Penrith this weekend.
The Rabbitohs’ injury toll reached crisis levels weeks ago. It has only got worse since as the club reels from a series of setbacks that have decimated their squad this season.
Englishman Lewis Dodd is now in line to be selected in the top 17 this week as the Rabbitohs prepare to take on a Panthers side that has been flying in recent weeks.
Penrith, after a slow start to the season, are back in the top eight and pushing for a spot in the top four as they get their premiership defence back on track.
The Rabbitohs’ slim finals hopes, meanwhile, have been shattered by injury. Moale has been a mainstay of the side this season, appearing in 16 games and scoring two tries.
However, the Rabbitohs will be forced to finish the season without him.
This masthead revealed on Tuesday that Walker’s 2025 campaign is all-but over with the former NSW Origin five-eighth succumbing to a frustrating calf injury in a setback for Souths coach Wayne Bennett.
The Rabbitohs were hoping Walker would make a return from injury in Friday night’s crucial clash against Penrith at CommBank Stadium in a replay of the 2021 NRL grand final.
But Walker is at long odds to return against the Panthers and is resigned to being wiped out for the rest of the year, putting further pressure on Latrell Mitchell to step up to keep Souths’ season alive.
It is understood Walker faces another six to eight weeks on the sidelines, capping an injury-ravaged season for the 35-year-old, who has managed just eight appearances.
Walker remains off-contract at season’s end but the injury won’t affect his contract negotiations with the Rabbitohs to formalise a one-year extension in the coming weeks.
The Rabbitohs are languishing in second last with 16 competition points and face an uphill battle to make the playoffs without the match-winning guile of Walker.
The one certainty is Walker will chalk-up 10 years of service at Souths next season as he looks to continue his lethal left-side partnership with Mitchell.
There were concerns the injury could force Walker into retirement, but Bennett insists the former NSW rep, who turns 36 in January, will be in Souths colours in 2026.
Prior to this season, Walker had missed just four games in nine seasons and is renowned as one of the club’s most professional trainers.
“Cody will be here next year,” Bennett said a fortnight ago.
“We’ll get the deal done.
“He started later than most guys in the NRL, he was around 25 or 26, so he’s looked after himself and he is a very good trainer.”
