Signed on a two-year deal last season following a stint with the Sydney Roosters, Spry has been given his first chance to show Gold Coast fans what he can do as part of a young Titans side that will tackle Canberra tonight ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Wests Tigers.

At 187cm and 98kg, the 20-year-old’s sizeable yet lightning-fast frame belies his quiet nature and he continues to impress club coaching staff with his strength and power.

WHY REIN ISN’T READING INTO TITANS CAPTAINCY CALL-UP

The Bulletin understands the Ipswich product is a strong contender for a wing/centre berth in next month’s season opener against Canberra and the versatile outside back hopes strong Nines form will be his ticket to a maiden NRL call-up.

“It should be good fun with the boys. It’s my first time playing Nines so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“Just the eyes-up footy and a bit space with early ball, it’s the footy I like so it should be good. I just want to go out there and play good, have fun, get through this weekend, get through the trials and see what happens.

THE MAN WHO HELPED DELIVER FERMOR TO TITANS

“The ultimate goal is to make my (NRL) debut this year but I’ve just got to play consistent footy and hopefully I get my shot. Justin (Holbrook, coach) been talking me through pre-season so I’ll just get through the trials and see what happens.”

Despite being locked in a battle for a Round 1 starting spot, another influential pre-season ally for Spry has been veteran winger Anthony Don.

With Holbrook determined to rectify a Titans defence that leaked 651 points last season, attack-minded Spry has turned to Don for advice on how to build his game.

“Donny has been helping me out a bit. I just go back and watch those videos of those more experienced players and try to learn what I can,” he said.

SEAGULLS SWOOP ON FORMER NRL FLYER

“Pre-season has been good, I’ve been pushing it out. It’s been tough some days but I’m getting through it.

“As a whole club we’ve been working on our defence so that’s been a big area that I’ve been focusing on. Just doing the principles, getting the principles right so that’s been a big focus.

“At the start I had to get used to it but I’m getting used to it now and I’ve just got to keep focusing on that. That’s the main part I want to focus on, getting the principles right.”
