Aided by a Player Points Allocation concession to ensure competitiveness in their debut A grade season, the Redbacks have been quick to move in the off-season transfer market but were forced to wait until last week for their eight signings to be given the green light by RLGC.

The group includes Intrust Super Cup stalwarts Josh Ailaomai and Lorenzo Maafu, 2019 RLGC players Daymeric Pelo (Runaway Bay) and Parahi Wilson (Ormeau), and former Queensland Country NRC representative Dion Taumata.

Coming off back-to-back reserve grade premierships, coach Wayne Forbes said the additions would be helpful as the Redbacks look to gain A grade respect but insisted they would not guarantee success.

“As head coach, one of the most gratifying elements to date is not having to chase players. Instead, players have been knocking our door down to get on board, which is pleasing and a credit to the ethos the club has created,” Forbes said.

“However, this element has also coined one of my biggest headaches - figuring out how we get the best bang for our modest buck whilst factoring in our limited player point allocation.

“Due to the player point system and the number of points allocated to us in our first year, we could only afford to sign four established RLGC players, which places us well behind the 8-ball.

“However, we knew this was going to happen, it’s part of the game and it’s all character building for us.

“Competing against powerful established clubs in one of the toughest comps in Queensland will be daunting and extremely challenging, especially since early indications show that nine out of our 15 games will be against the top three 2019 A grade sides.”

Forbes said he was also in discussions with former Tweed Intrust Super Cup centre Luke Dumas about a move to Firth Park.
