Manly Sea Eagles defeat poor Gold Coast Titans outfit 30-12 in Round 15 of the NRL

THE Titans are staring down the barrel of the worst season in their 13-year history after an abysmal performance in front of their home fans at Cbus Super Stadium.

Gold Coast sunk to a 4-11 record on the season with a 30-12 Round 15 loss to Manly in which they never looked in the contest.

CARTWRIGHT: WHY PROCTOR DESERVES RIGHT EDGE

The Titans’ defence was shockingly soft at times and they were badly exposed for it, even by a Manly side that were not exactly on their game.

Sea Eagles second-rower Curtis Sironen scored the first two tries of the game from close range, going straight between Moeaki Fotuaika and Tyrone Roberts the first time before steamrolling the latter 19 minutes later.

TRY-SCORING NOT EVERYTHING TO BEARS FLYER

Reuben Garrick then brushed off Phillip Sami – who was recalled in Dale Copley’s (calf) place – to extend the lead. Jorge Taufua made it three tries in seven minutes to secure a 20-2 halftime lead.

Whatever was said in the sheds made little immediate difference, with the Titans looking just as brittle after the break when Manly centre Moses Suli strolled over untouched from a play straight off the scrum.

Gold Coast finally added to their early penalty goal with a scrappy 55th minute play that somehow resulted in Phillip Sami touching down in the left corner.

AJ Brimson almost gave his side a glimmer of hope when he sliced through the Manly defence in broken play to score with 20 minutes on the clock, only for it to be called back for an obstruction.

CONCUSSION RISK: WHY COAST KIDS ARE COPPING IT ON THE FIELD

Helped by some reckless Sea Eagles attack, Sami did score again in the 67th minute to bring some respectability back to the scoreline.

The Titans had started competing better in the month before last weekend’s representative round but the bottom line is this dire showing comes at a time when the club are still in the midst of a mid-season review.

Gold Coast’s worst campaign came in 2011 when they went 6-18 to take the wooden spoon.

After being unable to win recent home games against any of North Queensland, New Zealand or Manly in a reasonable run leading into a bye next weekend, the Titans face a tough end to the season headlined by a pair of fixtures against Melbourne as well as an away clash with the Roosters.

Other matches include the in-form Panthers and Knights away, Brisbane and Parramatta at home and two games against St George Illawarra.

The Titans will now need to find three wins from that block of nine matches to dodge tying – or eclipsing – their worst ever win-loss record.
