Lost Titan: ‘The club must sign him’

This Lost Titan’s stint on the Gold Coast might not have been long but he’s calling for another big move.

The first-year wonders taking over the NRL

LUKE Capewell’s stint on the Gold Coast might not have been long but it also might not be the last by a Capewell.

The one-time South Sydney prodigy, who played seven NRL games for Gold Coast in 2011, believes the Titans should make a play for his off-contract younger brother Kurt.

A 26-year-old second-rower or centre, Kurt has blossomed across the past four seasons at Cronulla and has even moved into bolter status for Queensland’s State of Origin side.

“Kurty is awesome. I would love to see him up in Queensland somewhere,” Luke said. “I think they’re mad if they don’t sign him.

GOOD BAD AND UGLY OF TITANS COACHES

“He’s a Queensland boy, I think he would thrive at a club like that.”

The duo hail from Charleville in the outback but both made their mark in Sydney.

For Luke, it was at the Rabbitohs, where he debuted at 19 years of age and all up scored 15 tries in 28 games.

A fullback or five-eighth, he jumped at the opportunity to return north of the border with the Titans.

KEEBRA’S NEXT BIG THING

“I was a bit homesick down in Sydney, I was still pretty young,” he said.

“I definitely wanted to be in Queensland, I’m not a fan of Sydney.

“It was a short time (at the Titans), it was only one season but definitely one I enjoyed and will remember.”

TIME TO MAKE HARD CALLS: PROCTOR

The following year he found himself in Broncos colours – he grew up idolising Steve Renouf – but more so made a dent with feeder club Redcliffe, winning the Queensland Cup’s player of the competition award.

Two seasons followed in Penrith before a return to Redcliffe, where he begun a shopfitting trade and later moved into working as a linesman.

Capewell’s career took a turn for the worse in 2017 while he was at the Ipswich Jets, copping a one-year suspension for testing positive to a banned substance.

Still only 30, he no longer plays footy, instead happily balancing fatherhood with work.
